Signature of consciousness captured in brain scans

A telltale signature of consciousness has been detected that takes us a step closer to disentangling the brain activity underlying conscious and unconscious brain processes.
It turns out that there is a similar pattern of neural activity each time we become conscious of the same picture, but not if we process information from the image unconsciously. These contrasting patterns of activity can now be detected via brain scans, and could one day help determine if patients with brain damage are conscious. They might even be used to probe consciousness in animals.
"It's very exciting work," says neuroscientist Raphaël Gaillard of the University of Cambridge, who was not involved in the work. "The use of a reproducibility measure to disentangle conscious and non-conscious processes is genuinely new." Gaillard has previously shown that coordinated activity across the entire brain is one of the signatures of consciousness.
Consistent signals
So far, efforts to find a brain signature of consciousness have focused on the intensity of neural activity, how long it lasts, and whether signals tend to be synchronised across different regions of the brain.
"We were looking for something other than the intensity and duration of the neural activity that characterises conscious neural processing," says Aaron Schurger of Princeton University in New Jersey, who led the new work.
He and his colleagues hypothesised that when the brain is presented with the same sensory input – a picture, say – time after time, then conscious awareness of the picture should produce similar neural activity each time.
Conversely, if the sensory input did not enter conscious awareness, it should produce different brain activity each time because there would be other subconscious processes going on at the same time.
Invisible pictures
To test this hypothesis, Schurger and colleagues used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the brain activity in 12 volunteers who were asked to look at a series of images – some designed to elicit a conscious response, others a subconscious one.
The researchers invoked conscious processing simply by showing volunteers pictures of faces or houses. To invoke subconscious processing, the researchers presented volunteers with so-called "invisible stimuli".
These consist of two drawings, of either a house or a face, one shown to each eye. Crucially in each pair, one drawing is in pale orange on a pale green background, the other is the same drawing with the colours reversed. When the brain is confronted with such seemingly contradictory visual inputs it reconciles them by creating a yellow patch. So the volunteer consciously sees nothing but yellow, though the brain has subconsciously processed the face or house.
Probing anaesthesia
A set of fMRI recordings of subjects' temporal lobes backed up the team's hypothesis: each time a house or face was consciously processed by an individual, the resulting patterns in brain activity were similar. When the same image was processed subconsciously, the researchers found that the patterns of brain activity were much more variable. "Neural patterns were more reproducible when the drawings were seen consciously compared to when they were not," says Schurger.
The team thinks that reproducibility – the replication of similar neural patterns in the brain each time it becomes conscious of the same sensory input – gives us clues as to what consciousness is.
It could also be used in the future to tell if someone in a coma is conscious, or probe the consciousness of people under anaesthesia, something that also isn't well understood.

In America they have something called The Constitution. I’ve got one myself and it’s doing pretty good right now; thank you very much. My impression is that this constitution was created along with The Bill of Rights and god knows what else to protect the rights of the individual and to generally create a never, never land of shared equality that will burn forever in the warm, alcoholic night of the American Dream. It could have, I suppose, except for one thing and that is ‘lawyers’. Shakespeare had it right when he said, “First we kill all the lawyers.”
Now some might put up an argument against this and mention politicians, bankers, religious leaders or whatever but… none of these could accomplish much in the way of their avaricious and evil schemes without the help of…. (Drum roll) lawyers.

The law has no meaning and all of the concepts associated with it since Hammurabi is mere window dressing on a temple that fronts for a combination casino and brothel. The idea of any fine or noble foundation upon which to base any concept of civilization is nothing more than a dead rat in a silver chaffing dish because the structure can be altered to fit the needs of whoever can hire more lawyers for a longer period of time.

A South African experimenter has modified an electrolysis circuit developed by Bob Boyce so that now it recharges his daughter's electric vehicle riding toy. What makes this remarkable is that the energy is not drawn from the wall but from the environment somehow. He's done this around 35 times now and knows of three replications of the effect by others.

Riding for Free
Somewhere in South Africa, a little girl rides around nearly every day on her mini electric vehicle whose battery is recharged by an exotic, new form of free energy, making her possibly the first user of a technology that could soon rescue the mankind from their energy woes as well as bring a multitude of associated benefits.
A South African experimenter, who goes by the YouTube username of Watkykjy1 (pronounced something like "watt-cay-k-yay", Afrikaans for "what are you looking at?") has applied an electrolysis circuit developed by Bob Boyce, with his guidance, so that now it recharges his daughter's electric vehicle riding toy. The circuit is powered by the same battery it is charging -- whose voltage goes up overnight during charging, then down during the day as his daughter rides the toy around. He's repeated this some 35 times so far.

Scalar Energy?
He said the energy is coming from somewhere along the lines of Nikola Tesla's later work in which he sought to harness the wheelwork of nature.

"All this is, is a method for converting scalar energy to normal transverse energy. Tesla spoke about this in his one lecture called Methods of Conversion. All of these are related: zero point, scalar convertor, longitudinal tapping device, etc."

The Boyce circuit being used is called the "hex controller", having 6 channels controlled by a pic(atmega48 20mhz cpu), and was provided by Bob under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for a cost of around $1200 -- not the one Bob open sourced at PESWiki. Boyce is famous among researchers who are experimenting with using on-board water electrolysis to efficiently create Brown's gas (unusual species of common-ducted hydrogen-oxygen gas) which is injected into the air intake to catalyze a more efficient burn of the fuel. "I just implemented it according the conversations bob and I had, and came to these results", said Watkykjy1.

Successfully Replicated
That was more than a month ago. Now he knows of three other people who have been able to replicate this effect. "If Bob will allow me to share, I'd love to spread this far and wide. I already have all the supporting material, pictures, part numbers, etc. to do this. But at this moment I respect Bob's NDA."

Designed to scan the heavens thousands to billions of light-years beyond the solar system for gamma rays, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has also picked up a shocking vibe from Earth. During its first 14 months of operation, the flying observatory has detected 17 gamma-ray flashes associated with terrestrial storms — and some of those flashes have contained a surprising signature of antimatter.
During two recent lightning storms, Fermi recorded gamma-ray emissions of a particular energy that could have been produced only by the decay of energetic positrons, the antimatter equivalent of electrons. The observations are the first of their kind for lightning storms. Michael Briggs of the University of Alabama in Huntsville announced the puzzling findings November 5 at the 2009 Fermi Symposium.
It’s a surprise to have found the signature of positrons during a lightning storm, Briggs said.
The 17 flashes Fermi detected occurred just before, during and immediately after lightning strikes, as tracked by the World Wide Lightning Location Network.
During lightning storms previously observed by other spacecraft, energetic electrons moving toward the craft slowed down and produced gamma rays. The unusual positron signature seen by Fermi suggests that the normal orientation for an electric field associated with a lightning storm somehow reversed, Briggs said. Modelers are now working to figure out how the field reversal could have occurred. But for now, he said, the answer is up in the air.
Recording gamma-ray flashes — which have the potential to harm airplanes in storms — isn’t new. The first were found by NASA’s Compton Gamma-ray Observatory in the early 1990s. NASA’s RHESSI satellite, which primarily looks at X-ray and gamma-ray emissions from the sun, has found some 800 terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, Briggs noted.

Chemical companies fined for cartel practice

The European Commission has issued fines totalling 173 million euros to 24 companies for their part in a cartel.
They worked together fixing prices for heat stabilising chemicals which are used to make PVC products more rigid and thermally resistant; that is things like plastic bottles, packaging for food, coatings and even credit cards.
Swiss group Ciba, which is part of BASF, was hit with the biggest fine over 63 million euros for its part in two separate cartels.
EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said,

“They fixed prices, they allocated markets between themselves, they shared customers and they exchanged commercially sensitive information.” [In other words: like mafias]

The Dutch group Akzo was fined 40.6 million euros. France’s Elf Aquitaine has to pay 28.6 million euros. Italian, British, Australian and other Dutch firms were also fined.
A US company, Chemtura, had its fine cancelled for bringing the cartel issue to the Commission’s attention.

El pretexto era que para interrumpir –definitivamente- el acceso a internet iba a ser necesaria una decisión judicial. A cambio de esto, que es menos de lo que ya teníamos (¡), quedaba a salvo el propósito último de los Gobiernos y de toda su utópica sociedad del control que consiste en que ellos, o incluso terceros delegados por ellos (como sucede en Francia) inspeccionen la información privada que transita por la red sin control judicial previo. En la era de la información y la comunicación esto es obtener el acceso al poder con mayúsculas para los Gobiernos europeos y sus aliados corporativos.
Así, muchos políticos celebraban como un gran logro la obtención de "el derecho a ser oído (...) y el derecho a una revisión judicial efectiva y oportuna" para un ciudadano:

Efectivamente, los ciudadanos europeos, una vez más se levantaban con menos derechos gracias a sus representantes en Europa, y eso sí, nos lo pagan con parte de lo que ya teniamos a cambio de lo que nos arrebatan.

El Vaticano ha abierto la puerta a la existencia de vida extraterrestre, a pesar de que por el momento no haya pruebas[?!].
Desde el pasado día 6 hasta este martes se ha celebrado en el Vaticano la Semana de Estudios sobre Astrobiología, organizada por la Pontificia Academia de la Ciencia y la Specola Vaticana (Observatorio Astronómico), cuyo director, el jesuita José Funes, opinó que tiene "sentido" buscar formas de vida fuera de la Tierra, "aunque de momento no existen pruebas"[?!].
El astrónomo estadounidense Chris Impey dijo al término del encuentro que "es plausible" considerar que haya "cientos de millones de lugares habitables" en la Vía Láctea, a la vez que su colega francesa Athena Coustenis afirmó que los planetas Júpiter y Saturno también pueden albergar formas de vida.
Impey resaltó que gracias a los avances de la astronomía en los últimos 15 años se han descubierto 400 planetas fuera del sistema solar, así como vida en lugares inhóspitos del planeta Tierra.

Ucrania desclasifica parcialmente sus archivos secretos de OVNIs-UFOs

Después de que lo hicieran otros países en todo el mundo, Ucrania, a decidido desclasificar parcialmente sus archivos secretos sobre el tema OVNI.
Según un informe redactado por la emisora estatal de Ucrania (Natsionalna Radiokompanya Ukrainy, NRCU) se encuentra en el sitio web de la Asociación Ucraniana de ufólogos los informes facilitados por el gobierno (UFODOS).
El documento previamente secreto, da a conocer en la actualidad más de 500 testigos de avistamientos OVNI-UFO de los cuales los primeros registros, se remontan a épocas muy antiguas. Como dio a conocer el presidente de UFODOS Yaroslav Sochka, los casos fueron recogidos de diferentes fuentes. No se conoce exactamente qué casos se encuentran en los archivos desvelados.
Hasta el momento, una docena de países han publicado sus archivos secretos sobre el fenómeno OVNI-UFO, entre ellos Francia, México, Bélgica, Canadá, Brasil, Australia, Uruguay, Dinamarca, Suecia, Rusia y el Reino Unido.
Aún así existen muchas naciones que no han dado a conocer sus archivos secretos, en Europa algunos miembros de la OTAN han alegado que no están interesados en el fenómeno OVNI-UFO, entre ellos Alemania, y aunque llevan muchos años siguiendo este tema, no quieren o no desean hablar del tema.

'Something may come through' dimensional 'doors' at LHC

A top boffin at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) says that the titanic machine may possibly create or discover previously unimagined scientific phenomena, or "unknown unknowns" - for instance "an extra dimension".
"Out of this door might come something, or we might send something through it," said Sergio Bertolucci, who is Director for Research and Scientific Computing at CERN, briefing reporters including the Reg at CERN HQ earlier this week.
The LHC, built inside a 27-km circular subterranean tunnel deep beneath the Franco-Swiss border outside Geneva, functions like a sort of orbital motorway for extremely high-speed hadrons - typically either protons or lead ions.
The differences are, firstly, that the streams of particles are moving at velocities within a whisker of light speed - such that each stream has as much energy in it as a normal car going at 1000mph. Secondly, the beams are arranged in such fashion that the two streams swerve through one another occasionally, which naturally results in huge numbers of incredibly violent head-on collisions.
These collisions are sufficiently violent that they are expected to briefly create conditions similar to those obtaining countless aeons ago, not long after the Big Bang, when the entire universe was still inconceivably small - it was smaller than a proton for quite some time, seemingly, still with all the stuff that nowadays makes up all the supra-enormity of space and galaxies and so forth packed in somehow.
Naturally, some extremely strange phenomena are to be expected when one mangles the very fabric of space-time itself in this fashion. Various eccentric nutballs have claimed that this would doom humanity in one fashion or another; perhaps converting the entire Earth, everything on it and possibly the rest of the universe too into "strangelet soup", monopole mulligatawny or some other sort of frightful sub-particulate blancmange or custard.
It has also been suggested that cack-handed boffins at the LHC might inadvertently call into being a miniature black hole and carelessly drop this into the centre of the Earth, rather irritatingly causing the planet to implode. It's certainly to be hoped that the button marked "Call Black Hole Into Being" on the control board has some kind of flip-down cover over it.
Obviously all that's utter rubbish. But some boffins have speculated that black holes might alternatively act as spacewarp wormhole portals into alternate universes, or something. This would seem to chime with Bertolucci's remarks this week on hyperdimensional "doors" out of which might come unspecified "somethings".

Todos los narradores conocen la combinación perfecta para una buena historia: una víctima, un villano y un héroe. Y lo que vale para la ficción sirve también para una buena teoría conspirativa. Por poner un ejemplo nada al azar: la situación de la nueva gripe y la próxima vacuna. El reparto es fácil: la víctima es la humanidad, la verdad científica, los pobres del mundo; los villanos, la industria farmacéutica, la Organización Mundial de la Salud; y el héroe -escojamos uno; en este caso, una heroína-, una monja benedictina de las montañas de Montserrat, Teresa Forcades, con su famoso vídeo Campanas por la gripe A.
Habría sido más fácil, lógicamente, centrarse en otros personajes que, al amparo de Internet, han transmitido mensajes apocalípticos. Pero fijarse en Rauni Kilde, ex ministra de Sanidad finlandesa reconvertida en apóstol del desastre gracias a la información que obtiene de los extraterrestres, sería demasiado fácil.
Porque el mérito de Forcades es que -a pesar o gracias al hábito- parece seria, y, seguramente, actúa con buena intención. Con la mejor. Es médica por la Universidad de Barcelona, y afirma que se especializó en Medicina Interna en Nueva York. De hecho, la suya es, de todas las iniciativas ciudadanas, una de las mejor fundamentadas. Y ahí está el mérito. Como Mary Poppins, ella también, entre cucharada y cucharada de azúcar, puede hacer comulgar (nunca mejor dicho) con ruedas de molino.

Escribí un artículo anterior sobre el vídeo de Teresa Forcades, la monja benedictina que ha removido algunos cimientos ideológicos a mucha gente en todo el mundo, hablando de la Gripe A, de los virus, de las farmacéuticas sospechosas y de las anomalías detrás de esta pandemia de la que, día sí día no, nos hablan con profusión nuestros medios de comunicación.
En aquella ocasión, mi necesidad de decir ciertas cosas estuvo motivada por un reportaje publicado por el periódico La Vanguardia. Entonces pensé que había dicho lo suficiente. Pero ahora sé que es posible que necesite decir más, e incluso mass y mass… Y es que me parece que es ahora o nunca. O despertamos ahora o seguimos dormidos. Y si seguimos dormidos, habremos perdido el tren. O despertamos ahora al papel de los mass media en la configuración de nuestra realidad, o habremos perdido el tren.
Por eso creo urgentísimo seguir hablando de ellos y de sus métodos, mirándolos de frente. Señalándolos. Con una desconfianza rotunda, declarada, ostensible.
Una desconfianza tan grande que propongo iniciar un movimiento ciudadano que se dedique a dejar al descubierto los trucos de prestidigitación que emplean nuestros medias para mantener a la ciudadanía en estado de hipnosis. Un movimiento para el que tengo un título que me gusta; se llamaría “DESNUDANDO AL EMPERADOR”.
El periódico El País, en su edición del domingo 1 de noviembre, arremete de nuevo contra Teresa Forcades con algo que podríamos definir como “saña”. Al igual que La Vanguardia, con un reportaje a doble página, lo que indica la importancia que conceden al tema. Dos artículos forman el reportaje; ambos están disponibles en Internet. El más largo, firmado por María R. Sahuquillo y Emilio de Benito[los de arriba], tiene un título que lo dice todo… “Desmontando a la monja-bulo”. No haría falta que siguiera explicando más. De entrada ya nos hemos enterado de lo que pretenden decirnos. “Elija su conspiración” es el título del otro artículo, que está firmado por Ricardo de Querol.
