It is becoming increasingly clear that widespread consumption is wrecking havoc on the planet. But, if it’s making us happier then perhaps it’s worth the compromise, some argue. Strangely, that doesn’t appear to be the case, either. The spreading westernized belief that “more” possessions equates to more happiness hasn’t panned out. In fact, statistically, the First World now has more depression, alcoholism, crime, anxiety, obesity and overall dissatisfaction with life than was reported 50 years ago. What if “more” isn’t “more” in terms of consumption? Recent research is now shedding light on the phenomenon.
These studies suggest that our Stone Age brains, or what scientists refer to as the “primitive” brain is evolved to want more, but not necessarlily to ENJOY more. For example, Brain scans by Emory University revealed that the reward-chemical dopamine is released when we spot a product and consider buying it. Interestingly, only the anticipation releases dopamine. After the item is bought, the high often evaporates within minutes, and the purchaser may be indifferent to having one more item or even suffer from “buyer’s remorse”.
Last year Bonn researchers used brain scanning to show that humans don’t want lots of stuff, so much as they want MORE stuff than others. This is a confusing, scarcity paradigm that we share with monkey’s and other primates. The study found that whether or not people made big paychecks, for example, was much less of a motivating factor than whether they made MORE than their coworkers. In other words, winning the arbitrary “competition” appears to be more important than the reward itself.

A top scientist from the US labelled our bold bid to record alien activity in the UK as 'important'.
Cash-strapped Ministry of Defence chiefs secretly axed the department that investigated UFOs last month.
But now The Sun has picked up the baton as strange space sightings are close to an all time high.
American Dr Christopher McKay — a NASA extra-terrestrial investigator — said: "It is important to keep a record of UFOs. I think it is only natural as a human to wander whether there is life outside of Earth."
Dr McKay — part of NASA's Space Science Division since 1982 — has spent his career looking for extra-terrestrial life.
The planetary scientist was the co-leader of the Mars Phoenix Lander mission in 2008.
The probe dug up chunks of ice on the Martian surface again fuelling hope that living organisms existed on the Red Planet.
And he is busy planning a new mission to Mars in search of life.
He said The Sun's bid to record the UFOs over the UK shared the same the goal he was striving for — to discover alien life forms.
He added: "Tracking UFOs is the same as the interest that I have. My interest is from a scientific viewpoint but I am asking the same question.
"We are both asking the question - are there other life forms out there?"
British Mars expert Professor Colin Pillinger CBE echoed NASA's Dr McKay.
He applauded The Sun for reviving the MoD's UFO project after they shut it down on December 1 2009.
Any sightings in Britain will now NOT be officially recorded because MoD chiefs branded the £50,000-a-year department an "inappropriate use of defence resources".
It came despite the near TRIPLING of alleged UFOs between 2008 and 2009 to 643.
Prof Pillinger headed the Beagle 2 mission to Mars — which eventually ended in failure when the unmanned probe crashed on Christmas Day 2003.
He said: "The Sun is right to keep the UFO files going.
"You have an army of readers who could flag up something extraordinary.
"Even if it is not alien life, it could be a meteorite which are of great value to the scientific community.
"The Sun is right to persist in reporting UFOs.
"Just because we do not understand something does not mean it is not true."
Leading US professor Albert A Harrison, from the University of California, also backed our UFO files.
Prof Harrison — who served with NASA — said: "The reason it is important to report UFOs is because it fascinates people who are interested in possible life in the universe and whether or not we are alone.

Rocket Waves Destroy Sun Dog

What created those rocket waves, and why did they destroy that sun dog? Close inspection of the above image shows not only a rocket rising near the center, but unusual air ripples around it and a colorful sundog to the far right. The rocket, carrying the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), lifted off two weeks ago from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA into a cold blue sky. The SDO is designed to observe the Sun continuously over the next several years, exploring the Sun's atmosphere at high resolution and fast time scales. The air ripples -- seen about one minute after launch -- were unexpected, as was the sudden disappearance of the sundog after the ripples passed. Noticed and recorded by several onlookers, there has been much speculation about the origin of the ripples. A leading hypothesis holds that the ripples resulted from a sonic boom created as the rocket broke the sound barrier, which then jumbled a thin layer of ice crystals that were aligned to create the sundog. Lingering questions include why other rocket launches don't produce air ripples as noticeable, and why the ripples appeared more prominent above the rocket. If you know of images of any other aircraft or spacecraft that have produced similar air ripples, please post them to the discussion thread -- they may be help create a better understanding of the effect.

La idea de Ciclope es la creación de laboratorios que se puedan compartir y aprovechar los 365 días del año, las 24 horas del día.
Así una escuela que haga el esfuerzo económico de construir un cierto laboratorio, podría ofrecerlo o alquilarlo a otras escuelas o a otras universidades. Teniendo laboratorios accesibles vía Internet, no se necesita personal para atender a los alumnos en las horas de práctica.
Ésta es la filosofía original del proyecto Ciclope desde su nacimiento en 2001. Se ha diseñado un software común para todos ellos, siendo cada vez más los laboratorios docentes creados y puestos en marcha para la realización de prácticas a distancia. Ciclope pretende dar una solución a las restricciones de tiempo y espacio para la realización de prácticas que hay en la actualidad.

¿Qué es Ciclope?Las escuelas y universidades técnicas nunca cuentan con los recursos suficientes para la realización de prácticas. La queja habitual de los estudiantes es que hay mucha teoría y poca práctica. Un problema habitual es que las instalaciones no se utilizan durante todo el año ya que tiene que haber personal docente presente, y no se cuenta con él. Así en ocasiones sólo se aprovecha el laboratorio unos pocos días al año.
Muchas universidades, como la UPM, tienen asignaturas similares en diferentes centros, con laboratorios del mismo tipo. Esto supone una gran infrautilización de los recursos públicos. La idea de Ciclope es la creación de laboratorios que se puedan compartir y aprovechar los 365 días del año, las 24 horas del día.
Así una escuela que haga el esfuerzo económico de construir un cierto laboratorio, podría ofrecerlo o alquilarlo a otras escuelas o a otras universidades. Teniendo laboratorios accesibles vía Internet, no se necesita personal para atender a los alumnos en las horas de práctica.
Ésta es la filosofía original del proyecto Ciclope desde su nacimiento en 2001. Se ha diseñado un software común para todos ellos, siendo cada vez más los laboratorios docentes creados y puestos en marcha para la realización de prácticas a distancia. GAP Power: Magnetic Amplification & Neutralization

Magnetic Amplification and Neutralization can be used in many applications. A motor[below] just seemed the most logical for demonstration purposes.
Basically what's happening in the photo [above] is this: With no current applied to the coil, the magnetism from the permanent magnet travels through the core of the coil, making the core part of the permanent magnet. When electricity is applied to the coil, (+ -), it greatly amplifies the magnetism over and above what would normally be the combined force of the electro-magnet and the permanent magnet. It's actually 2.9 times the power of the permanent magnet. When the polarity is switched, (- +), the magnetism at the face end of the coil is gone. Simply stopped. At 18 volts, 95.31 percent of the power produced by the [below] motor is generated by the permanent magnet. The electro-magnet is just simply acting as a switch, which at the appropriate time, is turning on and off the magnetism from the permanent magnet.

Scientists examining the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte admit they are “deeply puzzled” by the discovery of a half-inch long microchip embedded in his skull.
