A neglected phenomenon
One of the most commonly used terms in medical language is the word placebo. The placebo effect is used as a scale for evaluating the effectiveness of new drugs. But what exactly is the placebo effect and what are its consequences in the deterministic structure of Western medicine? The placebo effect has been frequently abused by health professionals to denote and stigmatise a fraud or fallacy. Alternative therapies have often been characterised as merely placebos. But the placebo effect is not a fraudulent, useless or malevolent phenomenon. It occurs independently of the intentions of charlatans or health professionals. It is a spontaneous, authentic and very factual phenomenon that refers to well-observed but uninterpreted and contingent therapies or health improvements that occur in the absence of an active chemical/pharmacological substance. Make-believe drugs—drugs that carry no active chemical substances—often act as the real drugs and provoke therapeutic effects when administered to patients.

Effects of positive and negative thinking
The placebo effect has been often misunderstood as a solely psychological and highly subjective phenomenon. The patient, convinced of the therapy's effectiveness, ignores his symptoms or perceives them faintly without any substantial improvement of his health; that is, the patient feels better but is not healthier. But can the subjective psychological aspect of the placebo effect account for all of its therapeutic properties? The answer is definite: the placebo effect refers to an alternative curative mechanism that is inherent in the human entity, is motivated by therapeutic intention or belief in the therapeutic potential of a treatment, and implies biochemical responses and reactions to the stimulus of therapeutic intention or belief.

Researchers looking into how salamanders are able to to regrow their damaged bodies have discovered that the "almost magical ability" is closer to human healing than first thought.

The amphibians are almost unique in that if they lose a limb, a small bump forms over the injury called a blastema. Within about three weeks this blastema transforms into a new, fully functioning replacement limb without any scarring.

Scientists, studying the Axolotl salamander, native to Mexico, had long thought the amphibious creature's capabilities were down to so-called "pluripotent" cells, which had the uncanny ability to morph into whatever appendage, organ or tissue happens to be needed or due for a replacement.
But a paper in the journal Nature debunks that notion, discovering that the regenerative process is like a much more sophisticated version of healing in humans and other mammals. They found that repairs were down to much more standard stem cells – like those in mammals – but with the ability to reorganise themselves in the correct order to rebuild the body.

Un grupo de investigadores de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) ha desarrollado un nuevo material con unas características superiores a las del plástico y el cartón. Se trata de una sustancia elaborada a partir de los desechos de papel que aprovecha el cien por cien de la celulosa inservible.
El proceso se basa en un método ideado por el propio grupo, que ya lo ha patentado dado su carácter único. Consiste en aplicar un tratamiento biotecnológico a los restos de papel que aprovecha el material que no puede usarse en la elaboración de papel o cartón reciclado, de modo que los desechos se reutilizan en su totalidad. «Podemos transformar el polímero sintético o natural en un nuevo material, en celulosa», dice el investigador Gustavo García en referencia a las macromoléculas que componen los tejidos a tratar.
La transformación culmina con la obtención de un nuevo material que tiene aspecto de conglomerado, similar a un cartón grueso, pero con unas propiedades mayores: «Tiene mucha más resistencia que el cartón, es más próximo a la madera y dura más», destaca la jefa de la investigación, Margarita Calafell, que destaca que la clave se encuentra en la tecnología empleada.
La facilidad para moldear el material se suma a su carácter ignífugo, su impermeabilidad y su resistencia. Ello hace pensar que podría sustituir a materiales comunes como los utilizados en grandes embalajes o en soportes como palés. En el sector de la construcción, podría reemplazar a las placas de yeso o el porexpán, por lo que varias firmas ya se han interesado por él. «Nos hace falta que una empresa externa a la universidad decida producirlo para rebajar su coste», explica Calafell.

New Class of Black Holes Discovered

Only two sizes of black holes have ever been spotted: small and super-massive. Scientists have long speculated that an intermediate version must exist, but they’ve never been able to find one until now.
Astrophysicists identified what appears to be the first-ever medium-sized black hole, pictured in an artist’s rendition above, with a mass at least 500 times that of our Sun. Researchers from the Centre d’Etude Spatiale des Rayonnements in France detected the middling hole in a galaxy about 290 million light-years from Earth.
The discovery may shed some light on the origins of super-sized black holes like the one at the center of our own galaxy. These astral heavyweights top out at several million to several billion times the mass of the Sun, but their origin remains a mystery.

The new discovery is the most convincing evidence to date that medium black holes exist. Using the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton X-ray space telescope, the researchers identified a radiation source that gives off X-rays 260 million times brighter than the radiation of the Sun.
Called “Hyper-Luminous X-ray Source 1,” the structure sits on the edge of galaxy ESO 243-49. Because of the source’s physical characteristics and the pattern of its radiation, the researchers conclude it must be a black hole more than 500 times the mass of the sun: not too big, not too small, and the first of its kind.

Dualismo y emergentismo son temas recurrentes del discurso filosófico y teológico de nuestros días. Probablemente, el pensamiento dualista sea fruto de una predisposición innata a las antinomias localizada en el lóbulo parietal inferior izquierdo del cerebro. La neurociencia ha mostrado que es posible provocar experiencias espirituales (postura emergentista) y estos experimentos nos indican que el dualismo no es “real”, sino una categoría más de nuestra mente. La actividad científica no es compatible por tanto con hipótesis inmutables, por lo que todo lo que se dice en este artículo puede que esté equivocado.

Las etiquetas reflejan ese pensamiento dualista del que estamos hablando. En este sentido, llamar a una persona “materialista” o “espiritualista”, no sería otra cosa que llamarle “dualista cojo”, o sea que de la división entre materia y espíritu sólo considera una de ellas. En otros casos, suelen utilizarse esas etiquetas como armas arrojadizas para intimidar al contrario, como cuando se utiliza el término “reduccionista” para atacar a la ciencia. ¿Qué significa, por ejemplo, “trascendencia” en términos científicos, palabra que, por otro lado, en español está tan manida que se suele utilizar como sinónimo de importancia o relevancia?

El Reino Unido, el país europeo más afectado, anunció ayer que piensa cambiar la estrategia. Tras estimar que a finales de agosto se podrían registrar más de 100.000 casos diarios, las autoridades británicas dijeron que ahora se concentrarán en tratar la enfermedad, en vez de intentar contenerla.

El pleno del Parlament ha rechazado con los votos conjuntos de CiU, PSC y PP tramitar en comisión una Iniciativa Legislativa Popular (ILP) a fin de declarar Catalunya como territorio libre de cultivos transgénicos y prohibir este tipo productos por sus posibles efectos negativos en la salud humana.

La iniciativa ha sido defendida en el pleno por el portavoz de la Plataforma 'Som lo que Sembrem' Alexis Inglada, quien ha alertado que mientras que en países como Alemania y Francia se prohíben los transgénicos por sus riesgos, "aquí no vamos por aquí", porque Catalunya ya es "la nación europea que más transgénicos cultiva". "Ustedes, señores diputados, deberían preguntarse porqué", ha afirmado el portavoz de la plataforma, antes de lamentar que los gobiernos catalanes "se crucen de brazos" ante esta realidad. A stinging attack by John Hartigan, the CEO of Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited, labels bloggers and alternative media outlets as “political extremists”. Hartigan implies that bloggers should be jailed as they are in oppressive police states like China and Burma.
In a speech to the National Press Club, Hartigan savagely dismissed blogs as, “Something of such little intellectual value as to be barely discernible from massive ignorance. Bloggers don’t go to jail for their work. They simply aren’t held accountable like real reporters….It could be said the blogosphere is all eyeballs and no insights,” barked Hartigan. “In the blogosphere, of course, the mainstream media is always found wanting. It really is time this myth was blown apart. Blogs, and a large number of comment sites, specialise in political extremism and personal vilification. Radical sweeping statements without evidence are common.”
Hartigan doesn’t seem to grasp the fact that the mainstream media is always found wanting because they habitually lie about news events and spin stories to suit the demands of their corporate owners. This is the very reason why blogs and alternative media outlets have become so popular and have eaten into the mainstream media’s audience share, because people are sick of being treated like idiots, sick of being lied to, and are desperately in search of the truth.
Indeed, Hartigan’s boss Rupert Murdoch confessed to the fact that his media empire tried to shape public opinion to support the war in Iraq In other words, Murdoch’s many prominent news outlets wantonly put out propaganda supporting the manufactured case for invasion. Murdoch admitted to this while lamenting the corporate media’s “loss of power” to alternative media and Internet blogs, seemingly unaware of the fact that the two are directly connected.

First Electronic Quantum Processor Created... and Tested

They also used the two-qubit superconducting chip to successfully run elementary algorithms, such as a simple search, demonstrating quantum information processing with a solid-state device for the first time.

Working with a group of theoretical physicists led by Steven Girvin, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics & Applied Physics, the team manufactured two artificial atoms, or qubits ("quantum bits"). While each qubit is actually made up of a billion aluminum atoms, it acts like a single atom that can occupy two different energy states. These states are akin to the "1" and "0" or "on" and "off" states of regular bits employed by conventional computers. Because of the counterintuitive laws of quantum mechanics, however, scientists can effectively place qubits in a "superposition" of multiple states at the same time, allowing for greater information storage and processing power.
For example, imagine having four phone numbers, including one for a friend, but not knowing which number belonged to that friend. You would typically have to try two to three numbers before you dialed the right one. A quantum processor, on the other hand, can find the right number in only one try.
"Instead of having to place a phone call to one number, then another number, you use quantum mechanics to speed up the process," Schoelkopf said. "It's like being able to place one phone call that simultaneously tests all four numbers, but only goes through to the right one."

It’s not your average science fair when the 16-year-old winner manages to solve a global waste crisis. But such was the case at last May’s Canadian Science Fair in Waterloo, Ontario, where Daniel Burd, a high school student at Waterloo Collegiate Institute, presented his research on microorganisms that can rapidly biodegrade plastic.
Now another high school student from Taiwan named Tseng I-Ching swept the Intel international Science Fair for her discovery of “red bacteria” in the intestinal lining of mealworms that can metabolize polystyrene.

The preliminary results were encouraging, so he kept at it, selecting out the most effective strains and interbreeding them. After several weeks of tweaking and optimizing temperatures Burd was achieved a 43 % degradation of plastic in six weeks, an almost inconceivable accomplishment.

Reports circulating in the Kremlin today are saying that Russian Air Force Commanders have issued warnings to all of their aircraft to exercise “extreme caution” during flights “in and around” an area defined as Latitude 17 North [North Atlantic Ocean] Latitude 3 South [South Atlantic Ocean] to Latitude 8 North [Indian Ocean] Latitude 19 South [Indian Ocean] between the Longitudes of 46 West, 33 West, 46 East and 33 East, and which covers the greater part of the African Tectonic Plate.
The reason for this unprecedented warning, these reports state, are the rapid formations of “geomagnetic storms” emanating from the boundaries of the African Tectonic Plate that due to their intensity have caused the loss of two major passenger aircraft during the past month leaving nearly 300 men, women and children dead.

To the most chilling parts of these reports on the current instability of the African Tectonic Plate are those Russian scientists who assert, that, should a powerful enough gravitational force be exerted upon this region [such as that which would occur in our Earth’s presence with a Planet X type body], it would cause this plate to be subsumed with the Atlantic and Indian Oceans completely covering what is now known as the African Continent, and further cause a corresponding rise of what were known to the ancient peoples as the Continents of Atlantis in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and Lemuria in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Interesting to note about these current events is that the most documented psychic of 20th century America, Edgar Cayce, predicted that both Atlantis and Lemuria would arise again during the ending of our Earth’s present age, and which many in the World currently believe will be in 2012 as predicted by the Mayan Calendar.

CEI Releases Global Warming Study Censored by EPA

The Competitive Enterprise Institute is today making public an internal study on climate science which was suppressed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Internal EPA email messages, released by CEI earlier in the week, indicate that the report was kept under wraps and its author silenced because of pressure to support the Administration’s agenda of regulating carbon dioxide.
The report finds that EPA, by adopting the United Nations’ 2007 “Fourth Assessment” report, is relying on outdated research and is ignoring major new developments. Those developments include a continued decline in global temperatures, a new consensus that future hurricanes will not be more frequent or intense, and new findings that water vapor will moderate, rather than exacerbate, temperature.
New data also indicate that ocean cycles are probably the most important single factor in explaining temperature fluctuations, though solar cycles may play a role as well, and that reliable satellite data undercut the likelihood of endangerment from greenhouse gases. All of this demonstrates EPA should independently analyze the science, rather than just adopt the conclusions of outside organizations.
