If Neanderthals ever walk the earth again, the primordial ooze from which they will rise is an emulsion of oil, water, and DNA capture beads engineered in the laboratory of 454 Life Sciences in Branford, Connecticut. Over the past 4 years those beads have been gathering tiny fragments of DNA from samples of dissolved organic materials, including pieces of Neanderthal bone. Genetic sequences have given paleoanthropologists a new line of evidence for testing ideas about the biology of our closest extinct relative.

The Japanese Spider Crab

The Japanese Spider Crab is the biggest arthropod on Earth--their legs are believed to grow up to 12 feet long. But since they live at such great depths (typically 1,000 feet down or so) a full grown spider crab has yet to be caught. So for now, we'll have to make due with the 5 foot long Crabzilla, one of the largest known crabs in the planet.
The crabs are commonly found in the Pacific in 1,000 ft (300m) deep waters but have been known to live deeper.

big enough to straddle a car."

With 10 legs, believed to live up to 100 years, and the biggest of them believed to be lurking at depths over 2,000 feet, few creatures retain as much mystique as the spider crab.

Take the length of the equator on the map above, double that distance and you have the width of a human hair. For this is the world’s smallest world map, with the 40,000 kilometre-long equator reduced to a mere 40 micrometres.The smallest features on the map, corresponding to 100 kilometres, are about 100 nanometres wide.

The map was created by the Photonics Research Group at Ghent University in Belgium, and embedded in an optical silicon chip[above]. Miniaturisation on this scale (one trillionth [*], to be exact) will enable optical technology with a million times more components than in present-day, glass-based photonics, and opens the door to nanophotonic applications in consumer electronics[but, of course!], medical imaging, and telecommunications.
*: The factor of 1 trillion (1.000.000.000.000) is expressed by the prefix tera- (as in terabyte or teraflop)

US Facebook Map - Pete Warden

As I[Pete Warden]'ve been digging deeper into the data I[P.W.]'ve gathered on 210 million public Facebook profiles, I[P.W.]'ve been fascinated by some of the patterns that have emerged. My latest visualization shows the information by location, with connections drawn between places that share friends. For example, a lot of people in LA have friends in San Francisco, so there's a line between them.
Looking at the network of US cities, it's been remarkable to see how groups of them form clusters, with strong connections locally but few contacts outside the cluster. For example Columbus, OH and Charleston, WV are nearby as the crow flies, but share few connections, with Columbus clearly part of the North, and Charleston tied to the South:

Some of these clusters are intuitive, like the old south, but there's some surprises too, like Missouri, Louisiana and Arkansas having closer ties to Texas than Georgia. To make sense of the patterns I'm seeing, I've marked and labeled the clusters, and added some notes about the properties they have in common.

Stayathomia

Stretching from New York to Minnesota, this belt's defining feature is how near most people are to their friends, implying they don't move far.

Dixie

Like Stayathomia, Dixie towns tend to have links mostly to other nearby cities rather than spanning the country.

Greater Texas

Orbiting around Dallas, the ties of the Gulf Coast towns and Oklahoma and Arkansas make them look more Texan than Southern.

Mormonia

The only region that's completely surrounded by another cluster, Mormonia mostly consists of Utah towns that are highly connected to each other, with an offshoot in Eastern Idaho.

Nomadic West

The defining feature of this area is how likely even small towns are to be strongly connected to distant cities, it looks like the inhabitants have done a lot of moving around the country.

Socalistan

Californians outside the super-cities tend to be most connected to other Californians, making almost as tight a cluster as Greater Texas.

Pacifica

Tightly connected to each other, it doesn't look like Washingtonians are big travelers compared to the rest of the West.

Generally, we can come to a conclusion on something through a set of thoughts experienced within the mind, which is really nothing more than reading something or being told something and taking it as absolute truth based on that set of thoughts. This is a belief system – Religion. Or we can cease to make our thoughts our identity and remain much closer to our true essence, where we can see without blinders (the mind or set of thoughts) what we are experiencing.
Being religious is essentially an identity the ego grasps onto in order to keep itself fulfilled in a role it is choosing to play. Essentially, the ego now thinks that through thought, which is very limiting, it has found and experienced an absolute truth and in order to keep its identity alive, the very nature of “absolute,” will not allow it to “die.” Since the ego’s main goal is survival, it achieves this very easily by attaching to religion. (thinking, believing a set of thoughts)
It comes down to being locked up in the mind (thought and belief) vs. allowing the ego to not have an identity, not allowing the ego to strive to find a role it can latch onto. There is a general fear that we must BE something or know who we are and what we are about – “we” do not, only our ego does. When you recognize the awareness behind the labels and beliefs you have, you have found the consciousness or SELF behind the ego, showing you “spirituality” – that which lies beyond the false sense of self.

SERGE LATOUCHE: ‘Desarrollo’ y ‘crecimiento’ son dos palabras que suelen utilizarse indistintamente, aunque existan matices. Generalmente, cuando hablamos de ‘desarrollo’ pensamos en los países del Sur, mientras que cuando hablamos de ’crecimiento’ nos referimos más bien a los países del Norte, pero en cualquier caso es siempre la misma lógica de la acumulación, de la utilidad.

D.: En un contexto de crisis, la palabra ‘decrecimiento’ puede estar asociada a la pérdida de empleos.
S.L.: Es cierto, pero es al contrario. El decrecimiento, a diferencia del crecimiento negativo o de la crisis, consiste precisamente en salir de esa lógica que condena, de forma obligatoria, a destruir el planeta para crear empleos. A través del decrecimiento, al contrario, crearíamos empleos salvando al planeta; no sólo porque lo reparamos, sino también porque al reducir nuestro consumo, tendremos que producir menos, y teniendo que producir menos, tendremos que trabajar menos. Así, trabajamos menos, pero trabajamos todos. Lo primero que tenemos que repartir es el trabajo, frente al sistema totalmente absurdo en el que hoy vivimos, en el que incluso en Francia hemos suprimido las 35 horas y los trabajadores hacen 40, 50 o incluso 60 horas, mientras que otras personas que querrían trabajar un poco, no pueden hacerlo. Por otra parte, otras propuestas del decrecimiento, como el regreso a una agricultura tradicional y ecológica conllevará la creación de millones de empleos en este sector. La utilización de energías renovables también los creará, al igual que el sector de la reparación y del reciclaje. Algunos incluso piensan que llegaremos a una situación invertida en la que existirán demasiados empleos y faltará mano de obra, porque evidentemente, al no utilizar más el extraordinario potencial energético del petróleo (no hay que olvidar que un bidón de 30 litros de petróleo es el equivalente del trabajo de un obrero durante cinco años), por lo tanto, si ya no nos queda petróleo habrá que trabajar más. Pero tampoco tendremos que trabajar mucho más, porque reduciremos nuestras necesidades, las cuales trataremos de satisfacer sin trabajar demasiado porque también es muy importante no trabajar demasiado.
