Las crisis ponen en evidencia que si quieres no siempre puedes, porque, por mucho que quieras, no lograrás nada si antes no desvelamos que las reglas del juego de la economía son tramposas, producen desigualdad y nos penalizan a la mayoría.
No veo nada malo en autoayudarte.
Es perverso hacerte creer que todo lo que te sale mal es culpa tuya y debes mejorarlo y que, en cambio, las reglas del juego establecido por una minoría en su provecho no necesitan ninguna mejora.
Algunos de esos libros son divertidos.
Pero la ideología que los alimenta no: lleva a pensar, por ejemplo, que si hoy estás en el paro, es porque no deseaste el éxito lo suficiente ni te esforzaste. No sólo eres un perdedor y un fracasado sino que encima es culpa tuya y eso exculpa, de paso, a todos los demás responsables de tu paro.
Antes había perdedores simpáticos.
Hoy esa superchería del autocrecimiento lo impide: si eres un perdedor es porque también eres un vago que no se ha molestado en automejorarse. Antes el sistema era paternalista: había un amo del que emanaban en cada momento todas las órdenes que todos cumplían y si las cosas iban mal, también se preocupaba y ocupaba de los suyos...
Ya no quedan señoritos de esos.
Porque a partir del año 90 el capitalismo, para seguir creciendo, necesita nuevos empleados emprendedores, ya que las tecnologías de la información han dejado anticuada la estructura patriarcal. Ahora cada empleado debe ser capaz de tomar sus decisiones por la empresa y asumir sus consecuencias.
Gente que sepa mandarse a sí misma.
En la era digital, las empresas para ser productivas deben tener apariencia - sólo es una apariencia-horizontal: los amos y sus capataces ponen objetivos y los empleados los cumplen por los medios que quieran.
La célebre dirección por objetivos.
Es la ilusión de la autonomía personal cuando, en realidad, sus objetivos a menudo o son incumplibles o sólo se pueden cumplir si renuncias a todo lo que no sea trabajar. Los amos te dan toda la libertad para renunciar de la manera que quieras a tu propia libertad. Por lo menos, cuando imponían un horario, tu tiempo libre era tuyo.
Pero el trabajo produce satisfacción.
Esa es la trampa - envuelta en toda esa palabrería de autoayuda-de la felicidad por el trabajo. Sostiene que el trabajo es el único camino de la realización personal hacia la felicidad. De esta forma sólo puedes ser feliz haciendo ricos a los amos. Yyano te queda ser el pobre e inocente desgraciado, de antaño, ahora si no eres feliz, encima eres un indolente culpable de tu desgracia.
Trabajar antaño fue maldición bíblica.
Era el peaje del sustento. En la sociedad patriarcal era el fatigoso pero inevitable modo de mantener a la familia: hoy la economía necesita más implicación personal: exige ejecutivos autoconvencidos que renuncian a la familia y amigos para invertir todas sus horas en la empresa, lo que les convierte - creen los muy alienados-en superhombres y supermujeres felices y admirados.
Eso si la empresa funciona...
Es la otra paradoja: se te hace creer que todo depende sólo de ti, pero, a la hora de la verdad, todo depende de los resultados de tu empresa que a su vez pueden tambalearse, como ahora, por una crisis financiera que comenzó a miles de kilómetros por culpa de quienes sí deciden y ponen las reglas.
Tampoco podíamos crecer siempre.
El crecimiento tiene límites, pero el éxito ilimitado que promete la filosofía de la autoayuda necesita de la ilusión de que eres tú solo quien pone los límites, como si el planeta no los tuviera. Cuando tú puedes permitirte tres coches y dos piscinas, pero el planeta y su atmósfera, no.
A veces, crecer es ser más pequeñito.
Sí, menos mal que hemos "fracasado" en conseguir todos nuestros objetivos y aún podemos salvar lo que queda de la Tierra.
Aquí aún estarían enladrillando playas.
Esa lógica de la autoayuda propicia, en crisis, enormes cantidades de sentimiento de culpa, que a su vez se transforma en depresiones. En Argentina y Francia, el psicoanálisis es una religión y de su sacramento, los antidepresivos, argentinos y franceses son los mayores consumidores del mundo.
¿Por qué?
Precisamente porque son países con egos enormes educados en la fe ilimitada en la propia capacidad de control de uno mismo y de su destino, al que se considera mero resultado de las decisiones tomadas a lo largo de la vida. Las terapias breves, la PNL y otras técnicas alimentan esa ficción de control ilimitado, que no es más que la ilusión infantil de omnipotencia.
Y resulta que la suerte también existe.
Llámele suerte, destino, imponderables, lo que quiera, pero se trata de la madura aceptación de que una parte de lo que nos sucede - por ejemplo, esta crisis financiera-no depende exclusivamente de nosotros.
Pero sí nuestra actitud ante ella.
Veo que ha leído mucha autoayuda.
He entrevistado a un montón de gurús.
Léalos, pero a veces es mejor fracasar. Fracase, hombre: no sé si será más feliz, pero seguro que vive más tranquilo.

Memos shed light on CIA use of sleep deprivation

Reporting from Washington -- As President Obama prepared last month to release secret memos on the CIA's use of severe interrogation methods, the White House fielded a flurry of last-minute appeals.
One came from former CIA Director Michael V. Hayden, who expressed disbelief that the administration was prepared to expose methods it might later decide it needed.
"Are you telling me that under all conditions of threat, you will never interfere with the sleep cycle of a detainee?" Hayden asked a top White House official, according to sources familiar with the exchange.
From the beginning, sleep deprivation had been one of the most important elements in the CIA's interrogation program, used to help break dozens of suspected terrorists, far more than the most violent approaches. And it is among the methods the agency fought hardest to keep.

Because of its effectiveness -- as well as the perception that it was less objectionable than waterboarding, head-slamming or forced nudity -- sleep deprivation may be seen as a tempting technique to restore.
But the Justice Department memos released last month by Obama, as well as information provided by officials familiar with the program, indicate that the method, which involves forcing chained prisoners to stand, sometimes for days on end, was more controversial within the U.S. intelligence community than was widely known.

Jobless Spaniards sell kidneys to transplant tourists

A MACABRE traffic associated with poor countries in Asia and Latin America has sprung up for the first time in western Europe as the credit crunch reduces Spaniards to selling organs to “transplant tourists”.
Spanish “kidney for sale” advertisements have proliferated recently on the internet as people struggle to make ends meet in a country whose 17% unemployment rate is the highest in Europe.
Sergio, a 42-year-old welder and father of four, said he had received an offer of £20,000 from a German couple who needed his kidney for their five-year-old son. If tests showed them to be compatible, an operation would be performed in a “third country” since such transactions are illegal in Europe.
“Apparently, there’s a waiting list of at least five years for a kidney in Germany,” he told a television programme, “but in five years the kid will be dead.”

“The bank is on my back,” he said. “If I could think of some other way of raising the money, believe me, I would.”

In art, as in commerce, a price tag traditionally has magical powers. With the flick of a wand, a pound sign confers desirability on an item that might be thrown away if it was handed out for nothing.
And yet for almost a decade now, quality entertainment and culture, as well as mainstream sources of news, have been freely available on the web. The arrival of the internet has seen musicians, publishers and news organisations all slowly float off together into uncharted waters.
Consumers who have grown up during the past 15 years are completely at home in a world where much of what they want to hear, see or read will cost them nothing. True, in the case of some films and TV shows, the practices involved may skirt around the law a bit. Generally speaking, though, culture has become a happy free-for-all. Now may be the time to pay the bill.
Chris Anderson, a leading American commentator on the web and editor-in-chief of Wired magazine, puts the matter concisely: "Somehow an economy had emerged around 'free' before the economic model that could describe it." Anderson's next book, Free: The Future of a Radical Price, will both celebrate and analyse the effect of all this giving-away.

One of the biggest players in the game last week questioned the rationale behind the current give-away culture. Rupert Murdoch, head of News Corp, even went so far as to refer to it as a "flawed" business model when he spoke to reporters in New York. The media mogul – who owns the Times, Sunday Times, Sun and News of the World in Britain, as well as Fox News and the Wall Street Journal in America – announced that he was considering charging for more of his internet sites.
"We are now in the midst of an epochal debate over the value of content and it is clear to many newspapers that the current model is malfunctioning," Murdoch said. His volte-face followed background news that profits from News Corp newspapers were down year-on-year from $216m to $7m and that British newspaper advertising revenues were down 21%.

Aznar prefiere una "alianza de civilizados" a una de civilizaciones

Estoril (Portugal). (EFE).- El ex presidente del Gobierno José María Aznar no cree en una "alianza de civilizaciones" sino en una "de civilizados" que respeten los principios de la democracia y rechacen otros como el terrorismo.[!!!]
Otro participante en el mismo acto, el profesor de la universidad británica de Oxford Tariq Ramadán, replicó los argumentos de Aznar y calificó de "incivilizado" mentir sobre las armas de destrucción masiva atribuidas al régimen iraquí o participar en un conflicto "ilegal" para la ONU como el de Iraq.
Aznar manifestó que no cree en la alianza de civilizaciones porque no reconoce que haya un "choque de civilizaciones" y piensa que "civilización hay una" [La suya, no?].
No obstante, ante una pregunta del público, señaló que le aceptó el término "diálogo de civilizaciones" al ex presidente de Irán Mohamed Jatamí, cuando ambos se reunieron, como gobernantes, hace ocho años porque sí está de acuerdo con la necesidad de "dialogar" [Primero tendríamos que saber qué significa exactamente 'dialogar' para el Sr. Aznar].
"Puedo creer en el diálogo entre distintas culturas y países y no entiendo otra cosa que una razonable alianza de gente civilizada", agregó Aznar, que considera fuera de esa posibilidad a quienes no respetan el pluralismo, los derechos humanos, atacan las Torres Gemelas de Nueva York o ponen bombas en Madrid. [Uf! Con lo que ya sabemos tod@s acerca del 9-11, del 7-7 y del 11-M...Cómo se puede tolerar que siga diciendo semejantes cosas?!]
Aznar alertó también del peligro de que Irán tenga el poder nuclear y sostuvo que "un mundo con seis potencias nucleares es un mundo desagradable pero con veinte es inmanejable"[!!!] porque alguna acabará en manos de alguien sin escrúpulos [Porque EEUU, Rusia, Reino Unido, Francia, etc., son todas potencias ''con escrúpulos'', a que sí?].
En relación con Oriente Medio defendió la coexistencia de un estado de Israel y otro palestino pero cree "internacionalmente inadmisible" que se pretenda acabar con el estado israelí.
En el ciclo de Conferencias de Estoril, que concluye hoy, participaron también esta semana, entre otras personalidades, los ex gobernantes Tony Blair, del Reino Unido; Fernando Henrique Cardoso, de Brasil; y Mary Robinson, de Irlanda.

Revolta Global-Esquerra Anticapitalista

¿Existe vida a la izquierda de la izquierda? Al menos alguien intenta que la haya, sin traicionar los principios, pero adaptándolos a los tiempos que corren. A Olivier Besancenot (Levallois-Perret, 1974) el experimento le está yendo bien en Francia. Puede presumir de haber sacudido el espacio electoral izquierdista al ganarse el voto de millón y medio de franceses en las últimas presidenciales. Un golpe de efecto del que anhela contagiarse un partido presentado ayer en Barcelona y Madrid que busca aglutinar a la extrema izquierda cara a los comicios europeos.
La crisis económica puede ser el acicate para retomar una lucha contra el capitalismo que la caída del muro de Berlín parecía dar por terminada a finales del siglo pasado. Se trata de recuperar fuelle para "cambiar el mundo de base y derrocar el sistema". Utópico o no, con esa semilla germina Revolta Global-Esquerra Anticapitalista. Los principios suenan a otras épocas, pero los oradores han cambiado mucho y las palabras están matizadas.

El referente, Besancenot, es un mileurista que trabaja como cartero cuatro días a la semana en Neuilly-sur-Seine, una rica ciudad contigua a París de la que fue alcalde Nicolas Sarkozy. Se le conoce como "el cartero trotskista", conjugando su oficio con la ideología que parece pregonar. Parece, porque él huye de etiquetas. "No soy ni trotskista, ni guevarista ni luxemburguista (por Rosa Luxemburgo; soy un revolucionario". Precisamente para no etiquetarse decidió disolver la trotskista Liga Comunista Revolucionaria (LCR) que presidía para fundar el Nuevo Partido Anticapitalista (NPA), del que Revolta Global-Esquerra Anticapitalista es discípulo. "El anticapitalismo requiere de un movimiento internacional como el de, por ejemplo, los comunistas o los verdes".
Así lo defendió ante entusiasmados "camaradas" catalanes, quienes comprobaron su perfil joven y contestatario y el aire fresco que intenta imprimir a su revolución con 35 años y una cara de niño que a algunos les recuerda a Tintín. Eso sí, a diferencia de la ácida sátira que el personaje de Hergé hizo del comunismo cuando viajó al país de los Soviets, el lavado de cara que impulsa Besancenot incluye autocrítica. "La revolución precisa de ser reinventada, porque ningún experimento revolucionario ha tenido éxito. Muchos de ellos terminaron como caricaturas sangrientas".
En resumen, una revolución corregida y aumentada, pero permanente (como decía Trotsky) y ahora también internacionalizada (como dice Besancenot). "De ilusión también se vive", pensarán algunos. "¿Por qué no?", responde el NPA español en su lema electoral.

The Language of the Future: Evolutionary Math Breaks the Code

Harvard mathematicians have found that words evolve in a concise manner directly related to frequency of usage. The research looked at the evolution of the English language over the past 1,200 years and found that it’s the infrequently-used words with the habit of changing.
Apparently, just as genes and organisms undergo natural selection, words are also subject to a similarly intense pressure to "regularize" as the language develops. The researchers quantified this trend and compare it with biological evolution.
"Mathematical analysis of this linguistic evolution reveals that irregular verb conjugations behave in an extremely regular way- one that can yield predictions and insights into the future stages of a verb's evolutionary trajectory," says Erez Lieberman, a specialist in evolutionary math at Harvard University. "We measured something no one really thought could be measured, and got a striking and beautiful result."
What they found is that the less often a word is said, the faster it will change over time, whereas more commonly uttered words are much more resistant to change. The researchers believe this is because often-used irregulars are easy to remember and get right, whereas seldom-used irregulars are more likely to be forgotten. Speakers often mistakenly apply the ‘-ed’ rule. The most commonly used word that they found this happened to was the verb ‘to help’ – the past tense was once ‘holp’, but is now ‘helped’.
"We're really on the front lines of developing the mathematical tools to study evolutionary dynamics," says Jean-Baptiste Michel, a graduate student in systems biology at Harvard Medical School. "Before, language was considered too messy and difficult a system for mathematical study, but now we're able to successfully quantify an aspect of how language changes and develops."

When the sun sneezes it's Earth that gets sick. It's time for the sun to move into a busier period for sunspots, and while forecasters expect a relatively mild outbreak by historical standards, one major solar storm can cause havoc with satellites and electrical systems here.
Like hurricanes, a weak cycle refers to the number of storms, but it only takes one powerful storm to create chaos, said scientist Doug Biesecker of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's space weather prediction center.

Possible site of free will found in brain

Free will, or at least the place where we decide to act, is sited in a part of the brain called the parietal cortex, new research suggests.
When a neurosurgeon electrically jolted this region in patients undergoing surgery, they felt a desire to, say, wiggle their finger, roll their tongue or move a limb. Stronger electrical pulses convinced patients they had actually performed these movements, although their bodies remained motionless.
"What it tells us is there are specific brain regions that are involved in the consciousness of your movement," says Angela Sirigu a neuroscientist at the CNRS Cognitive Neuroscience Centre in Bron, France, who led the study.

Pilar Rahola recibe el premio del Comité Judío Americano

WASHINGTON. La periodista y articulista de La Vanguardia Pilar Rahola recibió ayer en Washington el premio de comunicación del Comité Judío Americano. En la ceremonia de entrega, Linda Mirels, de la junta de gobernadores, elogió a Rahola por "contar sin miedo la verdad" y citó uno de sus artículos en este diario. En su discurso, Rahola alertó de que España "se está convirtiendo en el país más neo-antisemita de Europa" y dijo que el extremismo islámico es el "nuevo enemigo" al que tendrá que enfrentarse la humanidad en el siglo XXI, tras derrotar al nazismo y el estalinismo.

Leaked documents from the 1955 Bilderberg Group conference held in Germany discuss the agenda to create a European Union and a single EU currency, decades before they were introduced, disproving once again debunkers who claim that Bilderberg has no influence over world events.
Leaked papers from the meeting which took place from September 23-25 1955 at the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, were released by the Wikileaks website yesterday.

As we first reported in 2003, a BBC investigative team were allowed to access Bilderberg files which confirmed that the EU and the Euro were the brainchild of Bilderberg. They were probably reading from the same documents that were released by Wikileaks.
It was only last month that Belgian viscount and current Bilderberg-chairman Étienne Davignon bragged that Bilderberg helped create the Euro by first introducing the policy agenda for a single currency in the early 1990’s.
However, the documents show that the agenda to create a European common market and a single currency go back decades earlier.
The summary report of the 1955 meeting talks of the “Pressing need to bring the German people, together with the other peoples of Europe, into a common market.”
The document also outlines the plan, “To arrive in the shortest possible time at the highest degree of integration, beginning with a common European market.”

Despite the plethora of manifestly provable examples of where Bilderberg's agenda has later played out in actual policies and geopolitical developments on the world stage, establishment media debunkers still scoff and sneer at independent researchers who dare claim that 150 of the world’s most influential powerbrokers meeting in secret to discuss the future of the planet might equate to something more than an informal talking shop, calling such assertions “conspiracy theories”.
Indeed, the sheer stupidity of debunkers to suggest that an event that attracts the titans of government, industry, banking, business and academia, at which the most pressing global issues of the day are vigorously discussed under the cloak of a mutually agreed media blackout, has no bearing on future world events, is the most laughable “conspiracy theory” ever uttered.

As part of the evidence given, several key points were raised including:

1. the ability of nanoparticles to cross the gut wall and other cellular barriers;
2. the potential novel toxic effects of such nanoparticles in the human body;
3. the possibility that other materials in the gut (e.g. bacteria or other contaminants) may attach to the nanoparticles and be transported across the gut wall (the Trojan Horse Effect)

Other important concerns included the ability of nanoparticles to interfere with cellular processes in the body e.g. oxygen metabolism, and the antimicrobial properties of some nanoparticles which may result in further harmful effects.
It was also emphasised that research to date has primarily been investigator driven, a consequence of the responsive funding mode adopted in the UK, and as such has focussed primarily on inhalation and dermal exposure to nanoparticles. This has led to a lack of research into the effects of ingestion of nanoparticles combined with a non-generalisability of current research. A more strategic coordinated approach, such as that recommended in the 2004 Royal Society Report, was necessary. These major gaps in the knowledge base, specifically relating to ingestion, was a key finding of the recent SAFENANO-led report EMERGNANO, one of the documents discussed at the hearing.

Radiocarbon Dating of the Underground Tunnel Complex In the Bosnian Valley of the Pyramids

The "Archaeological Park: Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun Foundation" reported that there is an underground network of a dozen tunnels under the pyramid complex in Visoko, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
A few hundred meters of tunnels that lead towards the Bosnian pyramid of the Sun have been cleaned and secured for the visitors and researchers. Stalagmites and stalactites have been found in the side passages, from which samples have been taken for analysis in one of the leading laboratories in Poland, at the Institute for physics.
The stalagmite formed in a collapsed part of the tunnel, which means that the age of the tunnel is much older than the age of the stalagmite.
Professor dr. Anna Pazdur of Silesian University of Technology (Gliwice, Poland) signed the Polish laboratory report, and stresses that the age of the stalagmite is 5080 years (+/- 75 years).
This means that the tunnel complex predates other cultures on Bosnian soil from the past: the middle ages Bosnian state (800 years), ancient Rome (2000 years), ancient Greece (2500 years), the Ilyric tribes (2800 years) and the Butmir culture (4600 years). [!!!]
The age of five thousand years is the minimal age of the tunnel: the date this advanced engineering underground complex was made has yet to be determined. The Foundation is continuing with a multidisciplinary approach to processing the archaeological finding.

California could be broke by July, state official warns

California could run out of money as soon as July, the Legislature's chief budget analyst warned Thursday, as a new poll showed voters poised to reject five budget-related measures on the May 19 ballot.
If the propositions do not pass, the state could find itself as much as $23 billion short of the money it needs to pay its bills over the next year, according to a new forecast by Legislative Analyst Mac Taylor. The poll, from the Public Policy Institute of California, found that even as voter interest in the ballot measures rises, all are trailing except the sixth one -- Proposition 1F, which would bar pay hikes for lawmakers in deficit years.
The other measures would provide the state with as much as $6 billion in the coming year through borrowing against the California State Lottery and temporarily reducing some social services.

As the ballot measures lag in the polls, the administration of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has begun revealing the cuts it is weighing as an alternative.
On Thursday, the administration advised law enforcement officials that it was preparing plans to commute the sentences of 38,000 state prison inmates, including all illegal immigrants. It also is considering closing some prisons and sending inmates to county jails, according to a copy of the proposal obtained by The Times.

UFO investigators reveal possible otherworldly relic

UFO investigators held a press conference at the Roswell Civic and Convention Center on Thursday to announce that they found ... something.
"At this point, we don't know what it was or why it was there," said UFO investigator Chuck Zukowski. "I don't want to speculate."
"We want to announce to the world that this stuff needs further analysis," explained Dr. Bill Doleman, a retired archaeologist who supervised the dig where the items were found.
The artifacts were discovered in 2002 during a dig sponsored by the Sci Fi Channel, at a site where some eyewitnesses say a mysterious craft ricocheted off the ground in 1947.

Zukowski said it took years for them to figure out whether they could run tests on the items.
Zukowski said he determined that the artifact was mostly aluminum silicate. Other elements showed up in the sample, but he believes they are mostly from the microscope's surroundings or dirt that clung to the object.
Doleman said that aluminum silicate is not uncommon in nature, but the item was found on a limestone plateau, which is mostly calcium carbonate. There seemed to be nothing around that would contain or produce the compound.

"We know this thing definitely is not organic, number one," he concluded. "Number two, we know it's not indigenous."

The items that Doleman found most interesting were some orange blobs of material. Assaigai Analytical Laboratories Inc. in Albuquerque found that they were modacrylic adhesive, a heat-resistant synthetic copolymer. The Union Carbide Corporation was the first to produce modacrylic fiber in 1949.
Zukowski said the modacrylic adhesive might tie into an eyewitness account. One of the volunteer excavators was Nancy Easly Johnson, daughter of Maj. Edwin Easly, who was allegedly at the crash site. Easly told Johnson little about the incident, but mentioned orange debris.

Just when concerns about H5N1 avian flu seemed to give way to other worries -- especially the flagging economy -- a new strain of H1N1 swine flu swept into our consciousness. Its most recent predations, and the responses to them, led virtually every newscast for two weeks.

Characteristically, pronouncements from the World Health Organization, an agency of the highly politicized and self-serving UN, have not been reassuring. Most flu and public health experts consider that their decision last week to raise the pandemic flu threat to the penultimate Level 5, "Pandemic Imminent," far outpaced the data and was alarmist and unwarranted. The "imminence" of a pandemic has pushed governmental authorities and individuals into unwise decisions: unnecessary school, business and event closings and purchases of anti-flu drugs on the Internet -- as often as not, a source of counterfeits. But flawed decision-making is typical of the WHO, an organization that is scientifically mediocre, unaccountable and self-serving, and whose policy role should be limited. [Why?]

Although pandemic strains of flu often are both qualitatively and quantitatively much worse than the seasonal flu viruses, the H1N1 virus causing the current outbreak seems to be relatively benign. Except for Mexico (for reasons that remain unclear), illnesses have generally been mild, hospitalizations few, and mortality minimal. Where are we, then, after about two weeks of accumulated knowledge and widespread publicity about the outbreak? For one thing, we're bedeviled by cost-benefit decisions of all sorts. Only hindsight will pick the winners and losers, but it appears that U.S. public health officials -- particularly those at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health -- have acted with appropriate judgment and restraint: They continue to accumulate, analyze and disseminate information and to offer advice to the public and health professionals. They are preparing for a worsening of the situation but are not overreacting. They have made testing kits widely available around the country and abroad. Their research laboratories are working around the clock, performing sequencing and other analyses of swine flu isolates, and they are preparing contingency plans should the situation change suddenly. Perhaps most important, they are not making dubious, alarmist pronouncements. [Really?? So it's just an illusion created by the media? Geez....]

A physician, molecular biologist and former flu researcher[?], he headed the Food and Drug Administration Office of Biotechnology from 1989 to 1993. [In other words, Mr. Miller joined the Food and Drug Administration in 1979 and served in a number of posts. He was the medical reviewer for the first genetically engineered drugs evaluated by the FDA and was instrumental in the rapid licensing (Meaning, without following the proper protocols for licensing...don't forget who were the presidents during the time Miller was in the FDA) of human insulin and human growth hormone. Giant rubber sea snakes could harness the plentiful clean power off Britain's coasts within five years, according to the inventors of a new type of wave-energy generator.
Checkmate Sea Energy unveiled the final stages of a proof-of-concept trial of its Anaconda device, seen by many experts as at the forefront of the next generation of robust, cheap wave-power machines that could slash the costs of making renewable electricity.
Made from a composite of fabric and natural rubber, the Anaconda rides oncoming waves and uses the motion to drive a turbine in its tail. The test device is nine metres long but its developers say that a full-scale device could be up to 200m in length and be capable of producing 1MW of power, enough for a thousand homes, and cost £2m to build. Farms of 50 or more could be placed underwater a few miles from the coast.

Más de un centenar de dominios de internet en español esperan al mejor postor desde ayer. Se trata de la mayor subasta de nombres de webs en este idioma, según asegura la empresa que la lleva a cabo, Sedo, plataforma internacional de compraventa de dominios, con sede en Colonia (Alemania).
En la lista de los 129 dominios a la venta figuran algunos nombres estrella, como descargas.com, ingles.es y afiliados.com. Son nombres genéricos, cortos y fáciles de recordar, ingredientes principales para que puedan considerarse dominios de calidad. También figuran nombres con terminaciones de países latinoamericanos, especialmente de México (.mx) y Argentina (.ar). "Nunca se ha hecho una subasta tan grande de este tipo, ni en número de dominios ni en calidad ni en precio de reserva", afirma Iván Díaz, responsable de Grandes Cuentas de España de Sedo.
El pistoletazo de salida se dio ayer a las seis de la tarde, cuando la web de Sedo registró los primeros movimientos de los compradores. A los cinco minutos, gay.es encabezaba la lista de los más demandados, con una oferta de 9.000 euros. Una hora después, aunque una puja aumentó a 10.000, había sido desbancado por xxx.es (por el que ofrecían 26.500 euros). Anunciar.es completaba el podio, con 9.900 euros. Ninguno de los tres, sin embargo, alcanzaba el precio de reserva. "Las pujas más fuertes vienen al final", matiza Díaz. Es previsible que cuando se cierre la subasta, el próximo jueves, 14, las cifras serán muy superiores. Sedo confía en adjudicar, al final del proceso, más de 90 dominios.

La Administración de Barack Obama se estrenó con la oferta a Rusia de apretar "el botón de reinicio" en las relaciones entre ambos países. Esta voluntad de tender puentes para evitar lo que en los coletazos de la era Bush se llegó a llamar una segunda guerra fría empezó a plasmarse ayer en Washington, capital que visitó el ministro de Exteriores ruso, Sergei Lavrov. En un gesto de consideración poco habitual, Lavrov fue recibido en la Casa Blanca por Barack Obama sin ser un jefe de Estado ni de Gobierno. Antes, Lavrov se reunió con su homóloga, Hillary Clinton, y ambos mostraron su voluntad de "elevar la relación entre ambos países a un nuevo nivel", en palabras de la secretaria de Estado. Este nuevo clima se resume en la voluntad de renovar el Tratado de Reducción de Armas Estratégicas (START en sus siglas en inglés).

La subcontratación de la guerra continúa bajo la Administración Obama, aunque se intente limpiar la imagen. Desde ayer, la compañía Blackwater -rebautizada en enero pasado como Xe- ha dejado de prestar sus servicios de seguridad en Bagdad, si bien continuará un par de meses más trabajando en ciudades del sur y llevando a cabo misiones aéreas. A Xe la sustituye otra empresa similar, Triple Canopy, muchos de cuyos empleados son curtidos profesionales procedentes de... Blackwater. [Con lo que nada cambia!]
La salida formal de Blackwater fue decidida por las autoridades iraquíes después del incidente de septiembre del 2007 en Bagdad, en el que resultaron muertos 17 civiles. La compañía, con sede en Carolina del Norte, se convirtió en un símbolo de la impunidad y la arrogancia de los ocupantes. En su afán por proteger al personal diplomático norteamericano, los mercenarios no se andaban con contemplaciones a la hora de disparar contra iraquíes inocentes si había la mera sospecha de que tenían intenciones hostiles. Blackwater también ha pagado un precio alto: 27 de sus empleados han dejado su vida en Mesopotamia. [Sí, sí...altísimo!]
El nuevo contrato del Departamento de Estado con Triple Canopy, radicada en Virginia, le supondrá a esta unos ingresos cercanos a los mil millones de dólares. Xe, estigmatizada por su experiencia iraquí, ha reorientado su negocio hacia el adiestramiento de militares y policías.
