Food Label Lies

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/02/25/9-food-label-lies.aspx
Food Label Lies - articles.mercola.com

The healthiest food often has the least marketing muscle behind it. The Center for Science in the Public Interest recently published a comprehensive report on the subject, a persuasive indictment called 'Food Labeling Chaos' [below].

Here are nine of the most common ways food labels lie...
"Made With Whole Grains"
Unbleached wheat flour is still the main ingredient; whole wheat flour is further down on the list, indicating that the product contains relatively little. One truth -- the presence of whole grains -- masks another; that whole grains make up an insignificant portion of the food.
Ingredients
Even if the first ingredient listed isn’t sugar, the product may contain more sugar than anything else. How is it possible? Just add up all the sugars that go by different names, such as sugar, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup and white grape juice concentrate.
Serving Size
There are 2.5 official servings in a 20 ounce soda bottles, meaning that 100 calories per "serving" is really 240 calories per bottle.
Omega 3
The FDA allows certain foods that are rich in two of the omega-3 fats to advertise that they can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, but only if they're also low in saturated fats or other risk factors. Which is why some unhealthy foods use a bit of marketing misdirection: the packaging has the word "omega-3
", but nothing specifically about heart health.
"Made With Real Fruit"
Usually the only thing approximating fruit is concentrate (sugar). If you want real fruit, buy real fruit. If you want candy, buy candy.
"0 Trans Fat"
Many reformulated foods are basically just as bad, but they scream one truth: "0 trans fats!" to obscure another: "Still bad for your heart!"
"Free Range Eggs"
This means chickens must be granted the luxury of exactly five minutes of "access" to the outdoors every day. Those eggs you buy may have been raised ethically, with room enough for hens to roam the yard. But there's no guarantee in the "free range" label.
Fiber
The fibers advertised in many foods are mainly "purified powders" called inulin, polydextrose and maltodextrin.
Tastes Like Medicine!
Food makers can't say that their product "helps reduce the risk of heart disease" without FDA approval, so they say that it "helps maintain a healthy heart."

LibertyLink®, Ignite® Herbicide Tolerant - www.diagonalperiodico.net

http://www.diagonalperiodico.net/Cien-campos-secretos-de-prueba-de.html

http://www.diagonalperiodico.net/Transgenicos-un-peligro-para-la.html
MON810 - www.diagonalperiodico.net

Stop 'Monsantosizing' Food, Seeds and Animals!

The undersigned individuals, organisations and institutions call on governments and patent offices to stop this worrying development and to revise existing patent regulations. The patent regulations in the EU, US and in many other countries, as well as the WTO Trips Agreement, urgently need to be reviewed in order to stop the monopolisation and corporate control of the world’s genetic resources. This review should lead to a regulation that guarantees the right to food and a prohibition of patents on plants and farm animals.

Stop GMO !!!

Tell USDA: Keep Nanotech OUT of Organic!

http://truefoodnow.org/2009/10/16/usda-considers-a-ban-on-nanotech-in-organic/
truefoodnow.org - The Center for Food Safety
USDA’s National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) is voting on whether nanotechnology should be banned from use in Organic products. Thanks to your overwhelming outcry in May 2009 the Board’s initial recommendation is to keep nanotech out of organic entirely. Now, we need your help again to make sure USDA holds the line! The critical vote on the Board’s final recommendation will be held in Washington D.C. on Nov 3.
Nanotechnology is contrary to Organic Principles and could further entrench industrial/chemical agriculture and industrial food as our dominant paradigm, to the detriment of public health and the environment. Tell NOSB to ensure the integrity of Organic on this issue by voting that USDA ban nanotechnology as an excluded method.

Experts Present Evidence to Committee on Nanotechnology in Food

http://www.azonano.com/news.asp?newsID=11326
http://www.foodtech-international.com/papers/images/application-nano/fig1-lge.jpg
As part of the evidence given, several key points were raised including:
  1. the ability of nanoparticles to cross the gut wall and other cellular barriers;
  2. the potential novel toxic effects of such nanoparticles in the human body;
  3. the possibility that other materials in the gut (e.g. bacteria or other contaminants) may attach to the nanoparticles and be transported across the gut wall (the Trojan Horse Effect)
Other important concerns included the ability of nanoparticles to interfere with cellular processes in the body e.g. oxygen metabolism, and the antimicrobial properties of some nanoparticles which may result in further harmful effects.
It was also emphasised that research to date has primarily been investigator driven, a consequence of the responsive funding mode adopted in the UK, and as such has focussed primarily on inhalation and dermal exposure to nanoparticles. This has led to a lack of research into the effects of ingestion of nanoparticles combined with a non-generalisability of current research. A more strategic coordinated approach, such as that recommended in the 2004 Royal Society Report, was necessary. These major gaps in the knowledge base, specifically relating to ingestion, was a key finding of the recent SAFENANO-led report EMERGNANO, one of the documents discussed at the hearing.
