A new report says that the number two source for news is not in black and white but ones and zeros. The internet has surpassed newspapers as the second most popular news source for Americans. Dana Loesch says there are many things that people can do with new media that traditional newspapers and magazines simply cannot and that is adding to their demise.

Gold Counterfeiting: German TV discovers 500g Tungsten bar from bank
German TV station, ProSieben, finds what appears to be proof of gold counterfeiting, in the form of tungsten gold substitutes coming to the W.C. Heraeus foundry, which is the worlds largest privately-owned precious metals refiner and fabricator, located in Hanau, Germany.
The foundry has isolated at least one 500-gram tungsten bar due for melting, originating from a (so far) unnamed bank, which, as the head of the foundry stated, made the unpleasant discovery that not all that glitters is gold.

In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary."

Obama Versus Blogosphere
"I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding."
· Barack Obama ·
Problems with the mainstream reporting:
- Widespread self-censorship by journalists.
- Censorship from editors and producers.
- Pro-war bias.
- Government censorship.
- And, of course, money.
In fact, many of the world's top PhD economics professors and financial advisors have their own blogs...
The same is true in every other field: politics, science, history, international relations, etc.
So what is "news"? What the largest newspapers choose to cover? Or what various leading experts are saying - and oftentimes heatedly debating one against the other?
As blogger Michael Rivero pointed out years ago, mainstream newspapers aren't losing readers because of the Internet as an abstract new medium. They are losing readers because they have become nothing but official stenographers for the powers-that-be, and people have lost all faith in them.
Indeed, only 5% of the pundits discussing various government bailout plans on cable news shows are real economists. Why not hear what real economists and financial experts say?
"In reality, the best blogs offer far more fact-checking and
context than the mainstream media."

Net response to Iran shows we are all newsmakers now

The uprising in Iran has been a perfect case in point - despite state censorship, the suppression of journalists and the shutdown of communications - the story has been covered from almost every angle: and the internet has played a vital part in getting the information out.

http://www.elperiodico.com/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=46&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=602103&idseccio_PK=1021&h=

Blogger claims police search of home was a threat
Police officers accused of drunken driving. A female officer's alleged promiscuity and infidelity. A commander whose critics labeled his son a child molester.
Jeff Pataky said he uses negative complaints and anonymous tips to fuel his blogging crusade against Phoenix police. A headline on his Web site suggests rewards would be provided for "dirt" on police indiscretions.
Police officials said Wednesday that a Phoenix detective prompted the investigation after complaining about harassment, though they declined further comment.
Pataky said he felt the investigation was a response to a lawsuit he filed on Monday in U.S. District Court saying he was maliciously prosecuted by police in 2007 after his ex-wife accused him of harassment, a case later dropped. In his lawsuit he's asking for an unspecified amount for damages. City officials declined to comment on pending litigation.
Pataky's blog is known in law-enforcement circles for its off-color language that, according to the blogger, is aimed at Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris, Maricopa County Andrew Thomas and other public officials.

Unpaid bills? Good luck starting future laptops
NEW YORK - As wireless carriers begin to subsidize computers that come with wireless Internet access, they're faced with a quandary: What do they do if the buyer stops paying his bills?
The company can cut off the computer's wireless access, but the carrier would still be out a couple of hundred dollars. The buyer would be left with a computer that's fully usable except for cellular broadband.
LM Ericsson AB, the Swedish company that makes many of the modems that go into laptops, announced Tuesday that its new modem will deal with this issue by including a feature that's virtually a wireless repo man. If the carrier has the stomach to do so, it can send a signal that completely disables the computer, making it impossible to turn on.
"We call it a `kill pill,'" said Mats Norin, Ericsson's vice president of mobile broadband modules.
The module will work on AT&T Inc.'s U.S. third-generation network, and on many other 3G networks overseas.
