BRAZIL: Murder, Death Threats Amid Environmental Protests

·Environmentalists and human rights activists in Brazil are demanding clarification of the murder of Paulo Santos Souza, a fisherman and trade unionist who was fighting irregularities in the construction of a gas pipeline for Petrobras.

The Associação dos Homens do Mar (AHOMAR – the fishermen’s union) for which Santos Souza was the treasurer, and other unions and civil society groups have called for a demonstration Wednesday in front of the headquarters of the state oil firm Petrobras, in Rio de Janeiro.
They are also demanding the interruption of work on a natural gas pipeline being laid some 60 kilometres from Rio de Janeiro, following reports of environmental permit irregularities and damages caused to flora and fauna in the mangrove swamps of Guanabara Bay.
The gas pipeline is part of the Liquefied Gas and Oil Project (GLP) carried out in the framework of the Accelerated Growth Programme (PAC) embarked on by the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Construction of the future Petrobras Petrochemical Complex (COMPERJ) is in the hands of a consortium, GLP Submarino, made up of the Oceânica Engenharia and GDK S.A. companies.
The head of AHOMAR, Alexandre Anderson, said that the engineering works, which began in late March, have particularly harmed fishing, which has declined by 70 percent since that time.
Although the union will not say outright that the two are connected, it says it is a remarkable coincidence that its treasurer was killed on May 22, the same day that the Environment Secretary of the municipality of Magé blocked the work on the gas pipeline because it lacks the necessary environmental permit.

Their new president, the one they sweated to elect — a brilliant, charismatic leader with a professional background in constitutional law — has transmogrified himself from the champion who denounced in his campaign the illegalities of the Bush White House into a president bent on their perpetuation.
Liberals are stunned by Obama’s plan to “restart Bush-era military tribunals” for some Guantanamo detainees, reviving what the Associated Press pointed out, is “a fiercely disputed trial system he once denounced.”(May 15). Liberals are appalled by Obama’s May 21st proposal to hold terrorism suspects in “prolonged detention” inside the U.S. without a trial. “Such detention,” Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) wrote him, “is a hallmark of abusive systems that we have historically criticized around the world.”
If liberals chaffed over Obama’s centrist cabinet choices, they were dismayed by his decision not to release photographs depicting the sadistic tortures the Bush Gang inflicted onprisonersduring a so-called “War on Terror” that was nothing but terror itself. A typical reaction comes from Joe Kishore, writing on the World Socialist Website (May 22): “Whatever verbal warnings Obama may make about the erosion of democracy in the United States, the actions of his administration facilitate and escalate its breakdown.”

Mary Shapiro, chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, will represent this country.
Bilderberg found President Obama a Willing Wilkie at its June, 2008 meeting in Chantilly, Va. near Washington. They were reassured when he chose their boy, Harold Koh, a strong advocate of the U.S. accepting the ICC, as the State Department’s top lawyer.

Astronauts Spot Mysterious Ice Circles in World’s Deepest Lake

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station noticed two mysterious dark circles in the ice of Lake Baikal in April. Though the cause is more likely aqueous than alien, some aspects of the odd blemishes defy explanation.
The two circles are the focal points for ice break-up and may be caused by upwelling of warmer water in the lake. The dark color of the circles is due to thinning of the ice, which usually hangs around into June. Upwelling wouldn’t be strange in some relatively shallow areas of the lake where hydrothermal activity has been detected, such as where the circle near the center of the lake (pictured below) is located. Circles have been seen in that area before in 1985 and 1994, though they weren’t nearly as pronounced. But the location of the circle near the southern tip of the lake (pictured above) where water is relatively deep and cold is puzzling.
The lake itself is an oddity. It is the largest by volume and the deepest (5370 feet at its deepest point), as well as one of the oldest at around 25 million years. The photo above was taken by an astronaut from the ISS. The photo below was taken by NASA’s MODIS satellite instrument.

ROSWELL DEBRIS CONFIRMED AS EXTRATERRESTRIAL: Lab Located, Scientists Named!

Newly discovered documents reveal that in the months immediately following the purported 1947 UFO crash at Roswell, secret government studies began on a material that was previously unknown to science. The "memory metal" that was studied precisely matches some of the debris material reported by several witnesses to the crash. Evidence shows that -under military direction- these unique metal studies were undertaken by a contracted laboratory that possessed advanced technical capabilities that the U.S. government itself did not have at the time. A former high-level scientist employed by the involved laboratory has offered a confession that he was tasked to study the crashed UFO material. Information provided by two U.S. Air Force Generals also offers direct support for this discovery.
The documents suggest that after the crash, the US government attempted to develop a unique material that is today referred to as memory metal. This shape-recovery alloy was reported by several witnesses to the Roswell crash in the summer of 1947. The lightweight "morphing" material was able to be crumpled or deformed and then return itself instantly and seamlessly to its original state. The metallurgical discoveries that resulted from these studies were then "seeded" for further technology development to other government agencies (including NASA) and through a series of military contracts to universities and industry.

What Is Facebook Actually Worth? $10 billion!

Holy cow, Facebook is worth $10 billion? That may be how the social networking Web site would like the world to interpret its latest capital infusion. But don’t be fooled. While that may represent a target valuation for Facebook, the actual worth, today, of Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room creation may be much lower.
That’s not to completely dismiss the headline figure. Under terms announced Tuesday, the Russian Internet investment group Digital Sky Technologies is plugging $200 million into the company for about a 2 percent stake. By that arithmetic, Facebook would indeed be worth $10 billion.
For a company that, by its own admission, won’t generate positive cash flow until sometime next year, that’s an impressive figure to bandy about. True, Facebook’s last capital-raising 18 months ago, which brought Microsoft and the Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing in as investors, put a $15 billion price tag on the company. But considering the trajectory of financial markets since then, the valuation attached to Digital Sky’s trade actually looks even more robust.

It seems a bit crazy to reinvent the wheel, but that is precisely what the Chinese inventor Guan Baihua has done. Although his new set of wheels have a little twist to them. The 50-year-old military officer from Qingdao has devised a rather curious new bicycle. Instead of circular wheels the bike has a pentagonal wheel at the front and a triangular wheel at the back.

Those who have tried it have been surprised at how smooth the ride is.
That is because the edges of the pentagonal and triangular wheels are not perfectly straight. The sides of the shapes bulge outwards in such a way that the wheels share an important feature with the circle: the diameter across the shapes is the same which ever way that you measure it.

A Reuleaux triangle is a curve of constant width. Opposite sides on each square are parallel supporting lines, since each touches the curve but does not intersect the interior. The fact that the Reuleaux triangle can be rotated whilst still just intersecting the boundary shows that width (separation between parallel supporting lines) is constant in all directions.

El que el actual modo de vida dependa excesivamente de las ciencias y tecnologías también ha obligado a la humanidad ponerse más expuesta a un peligro gravísimo. Es posible que los plasmas que se emiten desde la corona solar destruyan la red de suministro de electricidad en la Tierra y traigan otras consecuencias desastrosas secundarias. Los científicos han advertido de que la tormenta solar de 2012 causaría un grave desastre a la humanidad dando al traste con todos los sistemas vivos en la Tierra y ejerciendo una infuencia de manera del dominó. La prensa oficial china se hace eco de las imágenes de un supuesto OVNI

La prensa oficial china, normalmente reticente a publicar casos de avistamientos de ovnis y otros fenómenos paranormales, publicó este lunes imágenes de un objeto volante no identificado que fue fotografiado junto a una famosa pagoda budista en la ciudad de Xian (centro del país).
Diario del Pueblo, el periódico portavoz del Partido Comunista de China, publicó dos de estas fotos en su web, poco reveladoras en general, y en una de ellas se advierte uno o varios objetos de luces azules y verdes sobre la Pagoda de la Gran Ganso Salvaje, uno de los monumentos más conocidos de la ciudad.
El fotógrafo, de apellido Zhang, tomó las imágenes el pasado 21 de mayo, y en otra de las imágenes mostró como el ovni dejaba un "resplandor purpúreo" en el firmamento.
Un país de avistamientos
Encuestas publicadas en 2003 revelan que uno de cada cinco avistamientos en el mundo se produce en China, país en el que más de la mitad de la población cree en la existencia de los ovnis, según los mismos sondeos, aunque la prensa oficial tiende a censurar estas informaciones, por lo que es bastante novedosa la publicación de las imágenes en la web de Diario del Pueblo.
Un periodista de un medio oficial, que intentó hacer un estudio sobre los ovnis en China pero fue obligado por sus jefes a interrumpir las investigaciones, declaró en 2005 que "al Gobierno no le gusta que se informe de fenómenos paranormales, quizá porque los considera datos militares".

A Moratorium on Genetically Manipulated (GMO) Foods

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has just issued a call for an immediate moratorium on Genetically Manipulated (GMO) Foods.
In a just-released position paper on GMO foods, the AAEM states that ‘GM foods pose a serious health risk’ and calls for a moratorium on GMO foods. Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes ‘there is more than a casual association between GMO foods and adverse health effects’ and that ‘GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health.’ The report is a devastating blow to the multibillion dollar international agribusiness industry, most especially to Monsanto Corporation, the world’s leading purveyor of GMO seeds and related herbicides.
In a press release dated May 19, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, which describes itself as ‘an international association of physicians and other professionals dedicated to addressing the clinical aspects of environmental health,’ called immediately for the following emergency measures to be taken regarding human consumption of GMO foods:
* A moratorium on GMO food; implementation of immediate long term safety testing and labelling of GMO food.
* Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community and the public to avoid GMO foods.
* Physicians to consider the role of GMO foods in their patients' disease processes.
* More independent long term scientific studies to begin gathering data to investigate the role of GMO foods on human health.
The AAEM chairperson, Dr Amy Dean notes that ‘Multiple animal studies have shown that GM foods cause damage to various organ systems in the body. With this mounting evidence, it is imperative to have a moratorium on GM foods for the safety of our patients' and the public's health.’ The President of the AAEM, Dr Jennifer Armstrong stressed that ‘Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions. The most common foods in North America which are consumed that are GMO are corn, soy, canola, and cottonseed oil.’ The AAEM's position paper on Genetically Modified foods can be found at http:aaemonline.org.
The paper further states that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) technology ‘abrogates natural reproductive processes, selection occurs at the single cell level, the procedure is highly mutagenic and routinely breeches genera barriers, and the technique has only been used commercially for 10 years.’
The AAEM paper further states, ‘several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signalling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.’
They add, ‘There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation as defined by Hill's Criteria in the areas of strength of association, consistency, specificity, biological gradient, and biological plausibility. The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.’

As the clock ticks toward the release of the most influential of mental health textbooks, psychiatrists are asking themselves thousands of complex and sometimes controversial questions.
The answers will determine how Americans' mental health is assessed, diagnosed and treated.
Over the next 18 months, psychiatrists will hammer out a draft of the fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Assn.'s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, more commonly called DSM-V. Nowhere have the discussions been more heated, the ramifications most vividly foretold, than here at the organization's annual meeting.
Psychiatrists warn that the tome runs the risk of medicalizing the normal range of human behaviors.[And so do I]

Here in a dry California valley, outside a small town, a cathedral of light is to be dedicated on Friday. Like the cathedrals of antiquity, it is built on an unrivaled scale with unmatched technology, and it embodies a scientific doctrine that, if confirmed, might lift civilization to new heights.
“Bringing Star Power to Earth” reads a giant banner that was recently unfurled across a building the size of a football stadium.
The $3.5 billion site is known as the National Ignition Facility, or NIF. For more than half a century, physicists have dreamed of creating tiny stars that would inaugurate an era of bold science and cheap energy, and NIF is meant to kindle that blaze.
In theory, the facility’s 192 lasers — made of nearly 60 miles of mirrors and fiber optics, crystals and light amplifiers — will fire as one to pulverize a fleck of hydrogen fuel smaller than a match head. Compressed and heated to temperatures hotter than those of the core of a star, the hydrogen atoms will fuse into helium, releasing bursts of thermonuclear energy.
In February, NIF fired its 192 beams into its target chamber for the first time, and it now has the world’s most powerful laser, as well as the largest optical instrument ever built [INPhobe covered the unveiling of this project back on the 31st of March]. But raising its energies still further to the point of ignition could take a year or more of experimentation and might, officials concede, prove daunting and perhaps impossible.

·Young boys are developing closer bonds with television characters such as Bob the Builder than with their own, time-pressed parents, leading child expert Sue Palmer has warned.

Miss Palmer says that while children will always become attached to a favourite toy or story character, marketers are now exploiting this trait by creating a whole industry around it of DVDs, books and toys.
She believes that if parents use such pastimes as a substitute for spending time with their offspring, they could suffer from emotional and communication problems and struggle to form good human relationships in later life.
"If parents aren't careful, and especially if they aren't around, their son's relationship with Elmo, Bob the Builder or Fireman Sam could rival his relationship with them," she said. "Talking and singing to children is critical to the development of empathy and language, but it does not work with screens.
"The danger is that the child will be more fascinated by the things they see on screen, and not learn and be fascinated by real-life human beings and real-life play."
Bob the Builder is particularly appealing to boys because of the "boy-friendly ingredients of tool use, basic mechanics and male status", and they will come to associate their favourite character with "safety and happiness," she said.
In her new book, 21st Century Boys, she says the attachment to television characters, with their associated merchandise, is part of the toxic childhood that seeks children damaged by a combination of "junk food, junk play and junk culture".

Després de 65 dies empresonat sense ser jutjat, l'audiència de Barcelona ens ha donat la raó en quan a que la mesura de presó provisional sense fiança, empresa pel jutjat nº 29 era excessiva. L'auto de l'audiència, insisteix però en el risc de fuga, parlant de declaracions meves contradictòries, sense voler reconèixer que es va tractar d'un procés en que vaig decidir tornar assumint-ne les conseqüències coincidint amb la publicació Podem! del 17 de març.
L'audiència contradiu clarament el que havia dit el jutjat d'instrucció nº 29, així si aquell deia, sense avergonyir-se'n, que un motiu per "fugar-me" és que no tenia arrelament social, aquesta diu ara que tinc "una xarxa de connexions" a la meva disposició, per marxar o per situar-me en parador desconegut, sense sortir del país.
Així doncs l'audiència de Barcelona s'ha inventat "l'excés d'arrelament social" com a motiu per a prendre mesures cautelars. En què quedem? Encara que l'audiència ens hagi donat la raó parcialment, els 65 dies tancat, no me'ls treu ningú.
Tot i així, el meu pas per la presó ha estat una experiència enriquidora, que m'ha servit per aprendre per mi mateix, moltes coses del sistema penitenciari i de la realitat de les presons.
A nivell personal el dia a dia ha estat molt tranquil i no se m'ha fet massa dur, en part per la meva manera de ser, però també perquè no té res a veure entrar a la presó amb el suport social del que gaudeixo, que entrar-hi com el 99,9% dels interns, com a persones anònimes o senyalades com a pàries. S'ha volgut evitar que veiés, el que és la presó realment, però la meva observació i les estones compartides amb d'altres companys, m'han servit per fer-me'n una idea prou aproximada de la indefensió i la vulneració de drets fonamentals, que viuen els milers de persones recluses, en el nostre país, una falta de drets molt per sobre, del que en diuen les lleis vigents.
Les presons no compleixen la funció de reinserció que se'ls suposaria, sinó que accentuen el desarrelament social i falta de perspectives dels que hi són tancats. Aquesta experiència espero que em serveixi doncs, per poder contribuir a la defensa dels drets fonamentals dels reclusos i a crear debat social sobre la presó i les seves alternatives.
A més de criticar els fonaments d'aquesta decisió que ha posat preu a la meva llibertat, la fiança de 50.000 euros la considero excessiva també en la quantitat. Nomes cal mirar l'arxiu de les fiances demanades en d'altres suposats delictes, per adonar-se que és una xifra discriminatòria per motius d'idees. Tot i així, entre la gent que em dòna suport, algunes persones individuals que no volen dir qui són, l'han dipositat ràpidament. La gent que em dona suport considera que soc més útil al carrer que a la presó i és per això que tan ràpidament, m'han alliberat. Els ho agraeixo i assumeixo aquesta confiança dipositada en mi.
Tot i així, convé aclarir que d'aquests diners els bancs no en veuran res, perquè no són meus i que en ser una fiança no es tracta de donacions, sino de dipòsits que seran retornats a aquestes persones després del judici. Aquests dipòsits es traslladaran properament, a la banca ètica i cooperativa Fiare, de manera que en el jutjat només hi quedarà l'aval bancari corresponent que estem tramitant que aporti aquesta entitat. Serà d'aquesta manera com farem que la nostra resposta a aquesta mesura econòmica sigui coherent amb els objectius de la insubmissió bancària: aprofitant-la per reforçar el primer projecte alhora ètic i cooperatiu del nostre país.
El procés d'instrucció continua i pot ser llarg. Si els bancs em volen jutjar, la ciutadania jutjarà a la banca. Com s'ha demostrat en aquests 65 dies empresonats, per cada cop seu, el que faran serà amplificar la força de les nostres denuncies, el significat dels nostres arguments i la coherència dels nostres actes. Buscant un càstig exemplar, el que han fet és reforçar un exemple que inspira. Quan la voracitat i falta d'escrúpols de la banca ha quedat el descobert i ha fet de desencadenant de la greu crisi económica actual, una majoria social, considera que els lladres són els bancs i volen per mi l'absolució.
A partir d'ara, s'obre una nova etapa en que defensaré les meves idees en llibertat, tal i com anava a fer a partir del 17 de març. Dos mesos després, em reincorporo tant activament com sempre als moviments socials, i especialment a la xarxa pel decreixement i al col·lectiu crisi. Tenim molta feina per endavant per extendre els projectes presentats en la publicació podem!. I juntament amb centenars de companys i companyes, ens implicarem amb totes les nostres forces perquè el proper 17 de setembre, pugui ser un nou punt d'inflexió per a demostrar que podem viure sense capitalisme, i per visibilitzar la gran quantitat de persones que cada vegada més, volem viure d'una manera alternativa a la que imposa el sistema dominant i que ho estem començant a fer.
A nivell global, el temps passa i per més forts que són els arguments, per més clares que es manifesten les evidències, per més actors socials que ho reclamen, ningú a la classe política, gosa entrar públicament en el debat sobre si el creixement hauria de seguir sent un fi de l'economia en si mateix. En lloc de canviar el model económic perquè no necessiti créixer, es parla de canviar de model de creixement i es practiquen mesures que només tendeixen a perpetuar-lo. Es subvenciona la compra de cotxes, mentre cada cop més gent aturada pateix per poder menjar i tenir lloc on dormir. Així, s'està desaprofitant l'ocasió per a iniciar una transició cap un model econòmica i ecològicament viable. Si no ho fan ells ho haurem de fer nosaltres.
Si la classe política desvia l'atenció ens haurem de centrar. Ja n'hi ha prou de de falses promeses, de corrupteles i d'insults entre partits. Ja n'hi ha prou de cobardia i de càlculs electorals a curt plaç. Per què no parlem de com podem fer viable la nostra societat pel 2012, de manera que ho sigui també pel 2020 i el 2040?
Mentre les institucions públiques no reaccionin i continuin actuant segons la llei del silenci per tot el que no sigui el pensament únic capitalista, només tenim una opció i és la d'actuar directament; la de transformar la societat des de baix, des de l'autoorganització social.
La repressió no ens tallarà les ales. El poder no és tal sense obediència, ni sense por. Cada vegada som més les persones valentes i ens estem organitzant.
