Antipsychotics get tentative OK for kids

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-06-10-psychiatric-drugs-children_N.htm
http://discoverandrecover.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/drugs.jpg
With varying degrees of enthusiasm, a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee Wednesday concluded that three newer antipsychotic drugs already widely used "off-label" in children and teens are "acceptably safe" and effective in treating them for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, because of the risks involved with the drugs — mainly weight gain, sleepiness and increases in blood fats and sugars — several panel members expressed concerns about their inappropriate use in pediatric patients who don't have schizophrenia or bipolar disorder or are younger than the age range studied. "I'm a little concerned … that soon we'll be seeing 4-, 5- and 6-year-olds treated with these agents," said Kenneth Towbin, a psychiatrist with the National Institute of Mental Health who specializes in children and adolescents. AstraZeneca's Seroquel, Pfizer's Geodon and Eli Lilly's Zyprexa are approved for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults. Two other antipsychotic drugs, Risperdal and Abilify, are approved for those conditions in patients under 18. "I think everybody agrees that we want more medications, rather than fewer," [What!!!] said panelist Gail Griffith, a consumer representative[So, a consumer representative is basically saying, 'consumers want more drugs for their kids'???] from Washington, D.C.

'Ultracool subdwarf' stars speeding through Milky Way

·A recently discovered family of peculiar wandering stars may include a visitor from another galaxy, scientists believe.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/science/space/5489268/Ultracool-subdwarf-stars-speeding-through-Milky-Way.html
http://www.stsci.edu/~inr/thisweek1/thisweek/m81b.gif
The stars, described as "ultracool subdwarfs" follow very unusual paths around our galaxy, the Milky Way.
They have low temperatures and are small enough to be close to planet-like objects.
Only a few dozen ultracool subdwarfs, which are up to 10,000 times fainter than the Sun, have been identified.
One of the oddest aspects of the stars is the rapid speed at which they travel. They have been clocked at more than a million miles per hour.
[...]
Astronomers found that the stars had bizarre orbits. Some plunged deep into the centre of the Milky Way on eccentric, comet-like tracks. Others made slow, swooping loops far beyond the Sun's orbit.
Unlike the majority of nearby stars, most ultracool subdwarfs spent a lot of time thousands of light years above or below the galactic disc.
At least one of the objects - a star designated 2MASS 1227-0447 in the constellation Virgo - has an orbit indicating that it might have originated in another galaxy.

Uno de cada cuatro alumnos no domina las competencias básicas de catalán, castellano y matemáticas al final de la Primaria

http://www.elperiodico.com/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=46&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=620292&idseccio_PK=1021

http://www.lavanguardia.es/internet-y-tecnologia/noticias/20090610/53720695775/el-consejo-constitucional-frances-censura-la-ley-contra-la-pirateria-en-internet-parlamento-europeo-.html
http://www.doramas.net/files/delincuenteyo.jpg

'Orwellian language' in schools turns pupils into 'customers'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1191689/Hey-curriculum-delivery-person-leave-kids-How-Orwellian-Whitehall-speak-turning-pupils-customers.html

Schools using the 'Orwellian language of performance management' are undermining teenagers' education by turning them into 'customers' rather than students, a landmark report says today.
Teachers who are forced to use phrases such as 'performance indicator' and 'curriculum delivery' lack enthusiam for the job, the six-year investigation found.
The Oxford-based Nuffield Review, the most comprehensive study of secondary education in 50 years, said that 'the words we use shape our thinking'.
It notes: 'As the language of performance and management has advanced, so we have proportionately lost a language of education which recognises the intrinsic value of pursuing certain sorts of question ... of seeking understanding [and] of exploring through literature and the arts what it means to be human.'
Teachers are inundated with the language of measurable 'inputs' and 'outputs', 'performance indicators' and 'audits', 'targets', 'customers', 'deliverers', 'efficiency gains' and 'bottom lines', the report continues.
In a damning indictment, the report said that a culture of hitting targets, where 'cuts in resources are euphemistically called 'efficiency gains', has led to 'the consumer or client' replacing 'the learner'.

Scientists faking results and omitting unwanted findings in research

·Faking results and omitting inconvenient truths in scientific research is more widespread than originally thought, a study finds.

http://www.funnybones.com.au/BADSCIENCE.gif
More than two-thirds of researchers said they knew of colleagues who had committed "questionable" practices and one in seven said that included inventing findings.
But when scientists were asked about their own behaviour only two per cent admitted to having faked results.
The findings, published in the journal Public Library of Science, are based on a review of 21 scientific misconduct surveys carried out between 1986 and 2005.
The results paint a picture of a profession in which dishonesty and misrepresentation are widespread.

Daniele Fanelli, of the University of Edinburgh, who carried out the investigation, believes that high-profile cases such as that of Hwang Woo-Suk, the South Korean scientist disgraced for fabricating human stem cell data, are less unusual than is generally assumed.
"Increasing evidence suggests that known frauds are just the tip of the iceberg and that many cases are never discovered," he said.

Opening Doors on the Way to a Personal Robot

Willow Garage, a Silicon Valley robotics research group, said that its experimental PR2 robot, which has wheels and can travel at speeds up to a mile and a quarter per hour, was able to open and pass through 10 doors and plug itself into 10 standard wall sockets in less than an hour. In a different test, the same robot completed a marathon in the company’s office, traveling 26.2 miles. PR2 will not compete with humans yet; it took more than four days.
[...]
Willow Garage was founded by Scott Hassan, one of the designers of the original Google search engine. The company’s name is a reference to a small garage on Willow Road in Menlo Park, Calif., which was Google’s first office. The company is trying to develop a new generation of robotic personal assistants. Roboticists here and at other companies envision creating something on the scale of the personal computer industry, with mechanical personal assistants taking over a lot of drudgery, from cleaning up to fetching a beer from the refrigerator.
This is not a new hope, nor is it the first time that robots have tried to open doors, navigate rooms and recharge themselves. The Beast, a robot built at Johns Hopkins University in the mid-1960s, was able to locate standard wall sockets to refuel. And devices like the inexpensive iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner can locate and dock with a specially designed charging station.

Sleeping on a problem can really solve it

·Sleeping on a problem really can help solve it, claim scientists who discovered a nap can improve your powers of creativity.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/5476979/Sleeping-on-a-problem-really-can-solve-it-claim-scientists.html
http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/sleep-stages.gif
Researchers found that people were able to think more laterally and quickly after a snooze and that if they dreamed the ability was even more enhanced.
The scientists believe that "incubating" a problem often leads to a solution but that the effect was increased when people entered a phase of sleep known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM).
They believe that REM- which occurs most predominantly just before we awake – helps the brain make connections between unrelated subjects.
[...]
[...] it appears REM sleep especially helps achieve new solutions by allowing the brain to make new and useful associations between unrelated ideas.
"We found that – for creative problems that you've already been working on – the passage of time is enough to find solutions," said Prof Mednick. "However, for new problems, only REM sleep enhances creativity."
The researchers said that the findings suggested that sleep was a creative process and underlined the recommendation by Nobel Prize winning chemist Friedrich Kekule who said we must "learn to dream".

Worldwide spending on weapons has reached record levels amounting to well over $1tn last year, a leading research organisation reported today.
Global military expenditure has risen by 45% over the past decade to $1.46tn, according to the latest annual Yearbook on Armaments, Disarmament, and International Security published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).
Though the US accounts for more than half the total increase, China and Russia nearly tripled their military expenditure over the decade, with China now second only to the US in the military expenditure league table.
"China had both the largest absolute and the largest relative increase," says the Sipri report. The increase "has roughly paralleled its economic growth and is also linked to its major power aspirations," it adds.
Other regional powers, including India, Brazil and Algeria, also substantially increased their spending on arms, the report says.

Near Washington, D.C., construction crews watch for mystery 'black' wire

·A Metrorail extension risks hitting communications lines, including some used for top-secret government intelligence operations.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-black-wire7-2009jun07,0,7176956.story
This part happens all the time: A construction crew putting up an office building in the heart of congested Tysons Corner in McLean, Va., hit a fiber-optic cable no one knew was there.
This part doesn't: Within moments, three black SUVs drove up, half a dozen men in suits jumped out, and one said, "You just hit our line."
Whose line, you may ask? The guys in suits didn't say, recalled Aaron Georgelas, whose company, the Georgelas Group, was developing the Greensboro Corporate Center. Georgelas assumed that he was dealing with the federal government and that the cable in question was "black" wire -- a secure communications line used for some of the nation's most secretive intelligence-gathering operations.
"The construction manager was shocked," Georgelas recalled about the incident in 2000. "He had never seen a line get cut and people show up within seconds. Usually you've got to figure out whose line it is. To garner that kind of response that quickly was amazing."
[...]
"Yeah, we heard about the black SUVs [Watch video to see what those 'black SUVs' really are]," said Paul Goguen, the engineer in charge of relocating electric, gas, water, sewer, cable, telephone and other communications lines to make way for Metro.
"We were warned that if they were hit, the company responsible would show up before you even had a chance to make a phone call."

Sweden’s Pirate Party, which wants an internet filesharing free-for-all, is one of the surprise entrants to the European Parliament after winning 7.4 per cent of the vote.[Yeah!!!]
The party, which also wants to beef up internet privacy, was founded in January 2006 and quickly attracted members angered by Swedish laws that criminalise filesharing and authorise the monitoring of e-mails. Its membership shot up after a court in Stockholm sentenced four men in April to a year in jail for running one of the world’s biggest filesharing sites, the Pirate Bay. Voters had their revenge last night by electing at least one of the Pirate Party as an MEP.
“When the verdict was announced at 11.00am, we had 14,711 members,” said Rick Falkvinge, the party’s founder. “We tripled in a week, becoming the third-biggest party in Sweden in terms of numbers. All of a sudden we were everywhere.”

The words 'Nous ne sommes pas seuls' or 'We are not alone' will be somberly pronounced this week by a senior Government official of the nation that brought the world 'Liberté, égalité, fraternité'. France is set to concede that it is aware of an alien presence on earth by no later than Friday.
Paris has chosen follow the lead of maverick UFO nation Brazil and resist US pressure to continue delaying disclosure until America feels it is ready for the event.
It is believed that a telephone hot-line has been set up in Paris to deal with queries from panicky citizens. A special division of France's police department is also to be established: to handle UFO reports.
The French have gone to so much effort to protect their culture from encroaching 'Anglo-Saxon' influences and now they are preparing to protect their culture from what might be even more powerful extraterrestrial forces.
It is believed Holland and Germany are set to soon follow France's lead.

Universal ‘Rubik’s Cube’ Could Become Pentagon Shapeshifter

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/06/universal-rubiks-cube-could-become-pentagon-shapeshifter/
http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/dangerroom/2009/06/darpa_origami2.jpg
Even by the standards of the Pentagon fringe science arm, this project sounds far-out: [...] that can be ordered to “self-assemble or alter their shape, perform a function and then disassemble themselves.” But researchers back by Darpa are actually making progress on this incredible goal, Henry Kenyon at Signal magazine reports.
One day, that could lead to “morphing aircraft and ground vehicles, uniforms that can alter themselves to be comfortable in any climate, and 'soft' robots that flow like mercury through small openings to enter caves and bunker complexes.” A soldier could even reach into a can of unformed goop, and order up a custom-made tool or a “universal spare part.”
One team from Harvard is working on a kind of “generalized Rubik’s Cube” that can fold into all kinds of shapes. Another is trying to order large strands of synthetic DNA to bind together in a “molecular Velcro.” An MIT group is building “’self-folding origami’ machines that use specialized sheets of material with built-in actuators and data. These machines use cutting-edge mathematical theorems to fold themselves into virtually any three-dimensional object.”
The Programmable Matter project is five months into its second phase, which is supposed to wind up early next Spring. When they’re done, the researchers ought to “assemble four or five three-dimensional solids of a specific size and shape from a set of building blocks.”
Intel, which has done a bunch of programmable matter work on its own, is looking beyond those basic steps. Way, way beyond. The malleable stuff could one day “mimic the shape and appearance of a person or object being imaged in real time, and as the originals moved, so would their replicas,” according to their website. “These 3D models would be physical entities, not holograms. You could touch them and interact with them, just as if the originals were in the room with you.”

Was David Carradine Murdered For Investigating Secret Societies?

http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/17978/2003725480102774342S600x600Q85.jpg
During a segment that aired on the Larry King Show, CNN correspondent Jerry Penacoli says the death of David Carradine “was abnormal, the death was not natural. And the evidence shows that there were ropes tied around David’s neck and around his genitalia and that they were tied together. And that there is a report — several reports that there were ropes tied around his wrists.”
Later in the segment, Penacoli says a filmmaker and director named Damian Chapa, who worked with Carradine, said he “believes that there was foul play” in Carradine’s death. “And he said that no one else knows this but his family — Carradine’s family and friends and people closest to him, but David was very interested in investigating and disclosing secret societies.”
“So whatever that means…”
It means you can end up dead.

NASA Study Acknowledges Solar Cycle, Not Man, Responsible for Past Warming

·Report indicates solar cycle has been impacting Earth since the Industrial Revolution.
http://www.dailytech.com
http://images.dailytech.com/nimage/11265_sunspot_numbers.png
Some researchers believe that the solar cycle influences global climate changes. They attribute recent warming trends to cyclic variation. Skeptics, though, argue that there's little hard evidence of a solar hand in recent climate changes.
Now, a new research report from a surprising source may help to lay this skepticism to rest. A study from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland looking at climate data over the past century has concluded that solar variation has made a significant impact on the Earth's climate. The report concludes that evidence for climate changes based on solar radiation can be traced back as far as the Industrial Revolution.
Past research has shown that the sun goes through eleven year cycles. At the cycle's peak, solar activity occurring near sunspots is particularly intense, basking the Earth in solar heat. According to Robert Cahalan, a climatologist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, "Right now, we are in between major ice ages, in a period that has been called the Holocene."
Thomas Woods, solar scientist at the University of Colorado in Boulder concludes, "The fluctuations in the solar cycle impacts Earth's global temperature by about 0.1 degree Celsius, slightly hotter during solar maximum and cooler during solar minimum. The sun is currently at its minimum, and the next solar maximum is expected in 2012."

More on Monsanto...

Monsanto spent $2 million on lobbying in Q1 2009
[From grist.org]
Monsanto dominates the global market for GMO seeds like Microsoft dominates the operating-system software market.
You don’t skirt around antitrust enforcement like that without having good friends in Washinton. And to make friends, you’ve got have guys in suits working the Hill and the agencies. La Vida Locavore’s ever-enterprising Jill Richardson got her hands on Monsanto’s first-quarter lobbying disclosure form (PDF). Turns out, the GMO-seed giant spent $2 million pushing its agenda in Washington the first three months of the year.
[...]
Monsanto’s other big legislative concern? Strengthening already-draconian patent protection for the GMO seed industry—the one it dominates like Microsoft dominate operating system software.

Monsanto Planting Seeds in the White House?
[From opednews.com]
Apparently, President Obama is considering appointing Michael Taylor to head the new Food Safety Working Group. Who's Michael Taylor? From Food Politics (care of Jill Richardson):
Mr. Taylor is a lawyer who began his revolving door adventures as counsel to FDA. He then moved to King & Spalding, a private-sector law firm representing Monsanto, a leading agricultural biotechnology company. In 1991 he returned to the FDA as Deputy Commissioner for Policy, where he was part of the team that issued the agency's decidedly industry-friendly policy on food biotechnology and that approved the use of Monsanto's genetically engineered growth hormone in dairy cows.
His questionable role in these decisions led to an investigation by the federal General Accounting Office, which eventually exonerated him of all conflict-of-interest charges. In 1994, Mr. Taylor moved to USDA to become administrator of its Food Safety and Inspection Service... After another stint in private legal practice with King & Spalding, Mr. Taylor again joined Monsanto as Vice President for Public Policy in 1998.

UFO Disclosure June 2009 Timetable Revealed

by Michael Cohen
In regards to my previous article I[Michael Cohen] have been inundated with emails, mostly of a positive nature from readers noting that my version of events gels with theirs.
Some have been sceptical or downright negative. I should clarify that by 'Invasion' I do not mean an 'Independence Day' scenario.
The bottom-line reality is that the world stands at the cusp of open first contact. Admittance of definitive knowledge of an alien presence on earth by the governments of the world's major nations is literally days away. And that is a certainty. Disclosure, however, will be gradual. It is, in fact, already happening.

Over the next few days these events will occur:

·NASA will finally admit that it has 'some evidence' that aliens might be monitoring earth and that it is seriously researching UFO events.
·There will be an admittance by another government agency or relevant organization that there is reason to believe that some signals that have been picked up by radio telescope are probably of alien origin.
·The government of a major European nation will outright admit having knowledge of UFOs visiting our planet.

We are living in very exciting times. Yes, many are fearful of what open contact might mean. however others look to the very near future with anticipation and intense curiosity. We are about to discover things about ourselves and the universe that are going to completely alter our very sense of being and existence.

Humans Abducted by Hyperdimensional ETs

http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-2912-Seattle-Exopolitics-Examiner~y2009m6d4-Up-to-1-billion-humans-are-abducted-by-hyperdimensional-ETs-and-humans-are-in-cognitive-dissonance
http://www.ufoabduction.com/images2/icarheader0.jpg
Empirical, replicable research published by ICAR, the International Community for Alien Research, confirms that a hyperdimensional civilization consisting of amphibian reptilian hybrids and Gray cybernetic clones, have reportedly abducted approximately 1 billion out of the current estimated human population of 6,783,421,727 as of May 31, 2009 or approximately 14.7 percent of the present world population. These 1 billion human abductees, according to the replicable empirical research, – have had their consciousness and and/or their physical bodies taken by a quantum, hyperdimensional process, and returned to their original location (and in some cases original time) with erased memories of the abduction. Memories of the hyperdimensional abduction retrieved through hypnotic regression and similar techniques reveal consistent patterns during the abductions, related to a covert agenda toward the human species by this hyperdimensional species. One earlier study in the 2002 Roper Poll concluded that 2% of the U.S. population (now estimated at 306,587,601 on June 4, 2009) - had been abducted, or approximately 6.1 million persons by current figures.
This research has been made public in exclusive interviews with Joseph Montaldo, International Director of ICAR that can be heard on ExopoliticsRadio.org.
[...]
The canon of conventional academic science is that alien abductions are a psychodynamic artifact. One source states: “The abduction phenomenon has garnered substantial attention from mainstream scientists and mental health professionals, who overwhelmingly doubt that the phenomenon occurs literally as reported and who have proposed a variety of alternate explanations, including ‘[d]eception, suggestibility (fantasy-proneness, hypnotizability, false-memory syndrome), personality, sleep phenomena, psychopathology, psychodynamics [and] environmental factors.’”
[...] Yet this view is contradicted by replicable empirical studies carried out by ICAR according to standard protocols. These studies reveal that while some small percentage of alien abduction experiences are so-called “MILAB” or military abductions, the bulk of alien abductions are by a hyperdimensional civilization of amphibian-reptilians and their cybernetic accomplices, the Gray hyperdimensional civilizations.

Debris removed from the Atlantic is not from the airplane of Air France, says Aeronautics

A Brazilian news site is reporting the wreckage found is not from the Air France plane.
“The BAF (Brazilian Air Force) informed in the night of this thursday that the removed destroços of the Atlantic in this thursday are not of the Airbus A-330 of the Air France, that disappeared on board in the last sunday (31) with 228 people. In accordance with Brigadier General Ramon Borges Cardoso, director of the Decea (managing of the Department of Control of the Airspace), “no material of the airplane was collected”.
“Not, no material of the airplane was collected. What we saw they had been material pertaining to an aircraft who had been left because of the priority of searches of bodies. But until the moment no piece of the aircraft was recouped”, affirmed.” Sorry for bad translation to English.
So what does this wreckage belong to? [And more importantly, where's Air France 447, the A330 jet, and its passengers???]

Debris 'not from Air France jet'

Debris recovered from the Atlantic by Brazilian search teams is "sea trash" and not from a lost Air France jet, a Brazilian air force official has said.
Brig Ramon Borges Cardoso contradicted earlier reports, saying "no material from the plane has been recovered".
Teams found buoys and a wooden pallet and spotted a fuel slick, and are now searching for an airline seat and a chunk of metal seen earlier this week.

Brazilian air force says debris was not from Air France crash

The Brazilian air force said that debris picked up Thursday near where officials believe Air France Flight 447 crashed Monday into the Atlantic Ocean was not from the plane.
"It has been verified that the material did not belong to the plane," Brigadier Ramon Borges Cardoso told reporters in Recife about the material recovered Thursday. "It is a pallet of wood that is utilized for transport. It is used in planes, but on this flight to Paris, there was no wooden pallet."

Noctilucent Cloud

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noctilucent_cloud
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2008/images/nlc/iss017e011632_strip.jpg
Noctilucent clouds, are tenuous cloud-like phenomena that are the "ragged-edge" of a much brighter and pervasive polar cloud layer called polar mesospheric clouds in the upper atmosphere, visible in a deep twilight. They are made of crystals of water ice. The name means roughly night shining in Latin. They are most commonly observed in the summer months at latitudes between 50° and 70° north and south of the equator.
They are the highest clouds in the Earth's atmosphere, located in the mesosphere at altitudes of around 76 to 85 kilometers (47 to 53 mi). They are normally too faint to be seen, and are visible only when illuminated by sunlight from below the horizon while the lower layers of the atmosphere are in the Earth's shadow. Noctilucent clouds are not fully understood and are a recently discovered meteorological phenomenon; there is no evidence that they were observed before 1885.
Noctilucent clouds can form only under very restrictive conditions; their occurrence can be used as a sensitive guide to changes in the upper atmosphere. Since their discovery the occurrence of noctilucent clouds has been increasing in frequency, brightness and extent.

[And from New Scientist...]
Mysterious night-shining clouds may peak this year
http://images.livescience.com/images/070628_night_clouds_02.jpg
[...]
Although the average number of noctilucent clouds has been increasing in recent decades, their abundance also seems to rise and fall with the sun's 11-year cycle of activity. The clouds thrive when the sun is quiet and spews less ultraviolet radiation, which can destroy water needed to form the clouds and can keep temperatures too high for ice particles to form.
Because the sun has been abnormally quiet in recent years, noctilucent clouds could be especially bright and numerous this summer in the Northern hemisphere. "We expect this year to be a bigger year because of lower solar activity," says Scott Bailey of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA and a lead scientist for NASA's Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) spacecraft, which launched in 2007 to study the clouds. The clouds may be about twice as abundant this year as they are when the sun is at the peak of its activity, he says.

Scientists seek noctilucent cloud enlightenment
More night-shining expected in 2009, but why?
http://regmedia.co.uk/2007/07/02/noctilucent.jpg
[...]
Back in 2007, AIM principal investigator James Russell III of Hampton University suggested the increased frequency of Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMCs, as they're known when viewed from space - see pic above) might be due to "a connection with global changes in the lower atmosphere, and could be an early warning that our environment is being altered".
He said: "It is clear that PMCs are changing, a sign that a distant and rarified part of our atmosphere is being altered, and we do not understand how, why, or what it means."

Royal Navy warship almost fires on UFOs

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/06/03/royal_navy_vs_ufos/
http://regmedia.co.uk/2009/06/03/type_45_destroyer.jpg
A Royal Navy warship may have come within seconds of opening fire on Unidentified Flying Objects above Merseyside, possibly narrowly avoiding the precipitation of an interstellar war and the extirpation of humanity by testy aliens.
Reports have it that the UFOs - speculated to have been visiting spacecraft from beyond the solar system - were tracked on naval weapons radars.
[...]
So far, so what. But then the Telegraph entered the debate with stunning revelations from "an ex-military source" regarding the presence of HMS Daring, a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer which was docked in Liverpool as the UFOs passed over.
[...]
The Telegraph says that the UFOs were actually "countermeasure flares used to test the radar systems of huge anti-missile guns on the ship".
[...]
The "Radar countermeasure flares" notion is plainly poppycock, however. Countermeasure flares are for confusing infrared systems, not radar - though ordinary illumination flares are used occasionally as aiming targets for lighter manually-aimed guns. But you certainly aren't going to start letting off flares over a densely-populated urban area in the UK, so we're staying with the much more credible alien-visitors idea.
So what we've got here is HMS Daring tracking extraterrestrial spacecraft, and possibly almost certainly coming within inches of triggering an interstellar invasion by an ill-timed freak accidental firing mishap. That is, in the unlikely event that the rather feeble weapons actually fitted to the navy's newest, billion-pound destroyer were actually able to do any harm.

Quetzalcoatl And The Galactic Jellyfish

At 9:45pm on Wednesday (03-Jun-2009), I[Neil Kramer] was pondering the manifestation of crop circles and how their remarkable glyphs might occur in other mediums/substances apart from cereal crop. I recalled there have been formations in snow, ice and water. I thought about sand. Earth. Like the Nazca lines. What about the sky? Air? As if to seek further inspiration, I looked up into the sky...
A massive serpent hung in the air above me, composed of a stunning twist of deep orange vapor. It remained motionless as I watched it, until the sun finally set over the horizon and nothing more could be seen. One word echoed through my mind: Quetzalcoatl.
Quetzalcoatl (pronounced ke.ʦal.ˈko.waːtɬ) is a Mesoamerican deity whose name comes from the Nahuatl language and means "feather-serpent". To the Mayans, the feathered serpent was known as Kukulcan or Ququmatz. To the Aztecs, Quetzalcoatl was related to gods of the wind (!), of Venus and of the dawn. He was also the patron god of learning and knowledge, this being reflected in his significance to the priesthood.
The first depictions of the feathered serpent can be seen on Stela 19 at the Olmec site of La Venta (Tabasco, Mexico), showing a serpent rising up behind a person. Though the customary explanation suggests a symbolic shamanic ritual, it has always looked to me like a pilot in a cockpit, with various instrumentation.
