Over the past year we have introduced the most significant changes to our immigration system since the Second World War. The problem in the past was not that it was too easy to get into Britain. The problem was that it was too easy to stay here.

The overhaul of our policy is most visible when it comes to student visas - an area highlighted in recent days by The Times after the arrest of a number of Pakistani citizens, in Britain on student visas, for allegedly being involved in a terrorist plot.

The changes to the immigration system will take some time to come into effect but the howls of protest from some on campuses suggest that they are already having an impact.

The changes for colleges, universities and students are primarily aimed at stopping abuse of student visas - whether using non-existent courses to obtain one, non-attendance by students or overstaying on a visa. Everyone who is honest in the immigration industry knows that student overstaying has been the immigration system's Achilles' heel.

Police delete London tourists' photos 'to prevent terrorism'

Austrian tourist Klaus Matza and his son who were banned from taking pictures of buses in Walthamstow.

Like most visitors to London, Klaus Matzka and his teenage son Loris took several photographs of some of the city's sights, including the famous red double-decker buses. More unusually perhaps, they also took pictures of the Vauxhall bus station, which Matzka regards as "modern sculpture".

But the tourists have said they had to return home to Vienna without their holiday pictures after two policemen forced them to delete the photographs from their cameras in the name of preventing terrorism. [!!!!!]

Matkza, a 69-year-old retired television cameraman with a taste for modern architecture, was told that photographing anything to do with transport was "strictly forbidden". The policemen also recorded the pair's details, including passport numbers and hotel addresses.

Man Detained As Terror Suspect For Photographing Police Car

Despite police claiming that an ambiguous section of the UK Counter Terrorism Act of 2008 would not outlaw taking photographs or film of police, a man was detained as a terror suspect this week simply for taking a photograph of a police car in order to document police misconduct.

62-year-old Malcolm Sleath, who is chairman of his local park society, saw a police car driving erratically down a North London park footpath, despite the fact that by law police are supposed to investigate on foot in such circumstances.

He began filming the police car to document the misconduct so that he could later present it to the chief sergeant.

Sleath was subsequently approached by the two officers in the car and was told he was being detained because he had breached Section 44 of the Terrorism Act.

El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama, elogió ayer el AVE español, y concretamente la línea que une Madrid y Sevilla, durante la presentación de su proyecto para construir hasta 10 corredores de alta velocidad ferroviaria en su país. El plan, que Obama admitió que es a largo plazo, es visto por la Casa Blanca como una forma de mejorar la competitividad de las zonas que cuenten con tren veloz, de reducir los costes medioambientales y económicos de las saturadas carreteras y de los aeropuertos, y también de crear nuevos puestos de trabajo.
Para vender su propuesta, el mandatario puso como ejemplo los exitosos casos de la alta velocidad en países como Japón, China, Francia y España. Del caso español, dijo que el AVE entre Madrid y Sevilla "tiene tanto éxito que en estos momentos más gente viaja entre esas dos ciudades en tren que en avión y coche juntos". No es la primera vez que Obama utiliza a España como modelo de los pasos hacia un nuevo tipo de modelo económico que quiere emprender en EEUU: también ha elogiado el uso en España de energías renovables, especialmente los parques eólicos.

"Aquellos que cumplieron con sus obligaciones fiándose de buena fe del asesoramiento legal del Departamento de Justicia no serán enjuiciados", indicó Obama en un comunicado difundido poco después de su llegada a México.

"Ya he puesto punto final a las técnicas descritas en los informes", subrayó Obama.

Uno de esos documentos, de agosto de 2002, dio luz verde para que se sometiese al miembro de Al Qaeda Abu Zubaydah a un interrogatorio con asfixia simulada.

"Consideramos que el uso de la asfixia simulada representa una amenaza de muerte inminente», señala el memorándum, que añade que «crea en el sujeto la incontrolable sensación física de que el sujeto se está asfixiando".

Aun así, el texto, redactado por el abogado del gobierno Jay Bybee, concluye que "ante la ausencia de un prolongado daño mental (...) el uso de estos procedimientos no constituiría tortura".[!!!!!]

The powers-that-be are trying to distract us from the looting of our wallets by the big banks by creating a left-versus-right, us-versus-them drama.

You know, the old divide-and-conquer schtick.

Americans from across the political spectrum are furious at the financial elite who have robbed us blind, and their enablers in government.

While at the moment, conservatives are getting more press, those on the left are just as angry. For example, leading progressive Glenn Greenwald wrote an essay entitled “The virtues of public anger and the need for more” cheering the fact that Americans are starting to get in touch with their righteous anger at being ripped off.

Liberals have launched their own version of the tea party protests calling for the big banks to be broken up.

And many leading economists and policy experts have thunderously railed against Obama’s continuation of Bush’s cover-up-the-truth, too-big-to-fail, stick-it-to-the-taxpayers approach to the economic crisis.

On the conservative side of the aisle, Ron Paul’s media coordinator said that the mainstream Republican party has tried to hijack the tea party movement and has “co-opted” its message. He warns against letting the movement be diverted:

It’s important the people at the grassroots level stick to our guns and say no when they try to co-opt our message….

Bringing in someone like Gingrich takes away from the message. Newt Gingrich enabled George W. Bush, he enabled the big spending…

And as Michael Rivero has written:

Beware this “left wing versus right wing” dichotomy. This is an attempt to trick us into arguing with each other instead of uniting against the common cause of our problems…

The only real divide is the one mentioned at the very top of this article. The one percent that owns it all against the 99% of us being driven into poverty. The poor against the oligarchs.

To my friends on both the left and the right, I urge you to remember that folks on the other side of the aisle are not the problem. As honest people on both the left and the right agree, the real problems are:

• Lack of honest disclosure about the shenanigans of the financial giants

• Failing to prosecute the criminal actions of those companies and their big wigs

• Failing to break up zombie insolvent companies

• Slipping trillions of dollars into the hands of the richest and most powerful companies under the table

• Gaming the numbers

• And continuing to pursue failed economic policies even after they’ve been proven counterproductive

If we fall for the divide and conquer strategy, where idiots on both sides try to focus our anger on the “other team” instead of the real culprits, we will get distracted, lose direction, and thus became easy to ignore and control. Then the powers-that-be will be able to continue pickpocketing us for years to come.

The Georgetown Apartments in Tampa, Fla., sold for $125 million in 2005 to a group that wanted to build luxury condos and town houses. Banks bought it back in December after foreclosure proceedings. Now part of it may become a bayfront park.

Reporting from Tampa, Fla. -- The Georgetown apartment complex was one of this city's most coveted properties back in 2005. Now Greg Chelius and Alex Size were touring it as if examining an exotic ruin.

They walked past the unmanned guardhouse and its broken windows. Size snapped photos with a digital camera. Chelius lifted the green fabric on a fence tacked with No Trespassing signs.

Building after building loomed in the near distance, all of them quiet and vacant. From Chelius' vantage, it was difficult to judge their condition.

"We heard they were in such bad shape they'd have to be taken down," he said.

"It depends on the drywall," Size replied. "And the rot. And the mold." [...they just let it all rot away... :( ]

They walked the eastern edge of the property, stopping at a place where they could glimpse -- through a thicket of weeds and Brazilian pepper trees -- the blue water of Old Tampa Bay, lapping at the property's edge.

As if on cue, a circling pelican dive-bombed for a fish.

"It's just outstanding," Chelius said.

These two men have big plans for the Georgetown property, 160 acres on the southwest side of the Tampa peninsula. But they are not planning to build.

United Airlines’ overweight passengers may have to buy 2 tickets

United Airlines' so-called "friendly skies'' could become a lot less hospitable for overweight air travelers.

Chicago-based United on Wednesday instituted a new policy that could present some unwelcome and costly options to plus-size passengers.

United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said the carrier received nearly 700 complaints about overweight passengers from among the 63 million passengers who flew United last year.

The new guidelines define an overweight passenger as anyone who can't fit in a single seat in his or her ticketed cabin or can't properly buckle the seat belt, or anyone who can't put the armrest fully down when seated.

Mr. Obama and Michelle Obama also reported giving $172,050 — nearly 6.5 percent of their earnings — to 37 charities, including $25,000 contributions to CARE, a global antipoverty group, and to the United Negro College Fund.

For the fourth year in a row, most of the Obamas’ income came from royalties from his two books: “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope.”

La joven que supuestamente lo empezó todo se llama Natalia Morar y tiene 25 años. Su mensaje a través de Twitter fue el desencadenante de la mayor protesta contra el gobierno comunista moldavo, presidido por Vladímir Voronin, por supuesto fraude en las elecciones del pasado 5 de abril. El rotativo inglés The Guardian ha entrevistado a Morar, quien destaca su sorpresa por el revuelo que causó su convocatoria. Decenas de personas resultaron heridas en la capital de Moldavia en violentos choques entre la policía y manifestantes.

En una entrevista del periódico británico, Morar admite estar preocupada tras su convocatoria. Lo que inicialmente tenía que ser una manifestación improvisada organizada el mismo día de las elecciones entre sus amigos terminó congregando a más de 20.000 personas en Chisinau.

Pero su pequeña acción ha causado muchos problemas a Morar. Según dice la chica al diario, ha tenido que mudarse de apartamento y cree que la policía moldava quiere detenerla. "Están vigilando mi casa y la de mi madre", sostiene. "Entraron en mi apartamento sin orden judicial. Si me encuentran, me detendrán y lo que suceda luego nadie lo sabe. No he hablado por teléfono en dos días por miedo a que me encuentren".

This April 15 is the 94th year that Americans have had to file an income tax. For most Americans, the day is a non-event. The federal and state governments have already collected the taxes due by withholding from each paycheck over the course of the calendar year. Most Americans never saw the money and have no real idea that they earned it.

Some Americans have their incomes over-withheld as a form of forced savings. They look forward to tax time as it means they will receive a refund check from the government that they can use for a summer vacation, a big screen TV, a new appliance, or a down payment on a new car.

Few Americans realize that over the last 94 years they have been enserfed and have no more rights to their own labor than medieval serfs or 19th-century slaves.

The 16th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified because the income tax was only for the rich. Some states ratified the amendment because no one in the state had an income high enough to be subject to the tax.

The figure cannot be repeated too often. Remember, when a candidate next solicits your vote, that four out of every five laws are proposed in Brussels by bureaucrats whom we did not choose and cannot dismiss. Voting is becoming a decorative, almost folkloric activity. Power has shifted from elected representatives to unelected officials.

The statistic, by the way, comes courtesy of the German Federal Justice Ministry, which did a comprehensive survey of all the legal acts adopted in Germany since 1998, and found that 85 per cent of them were there to give force to EU directives or regulations. In some of the accession countries the proportion might be even higher. There is no reason to believe that it would be lower in Britain but, if ministers think differently, let them produce their own figures. Until now, they have flintily refused to come up with an estimate. I think we can guess why.

The sowing season may be just around the corner, but this year German farmers will not be planting genetically modified crops: German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner announced Tuesday she was banning the cultivation of GM corn in Germany.
Under the new regulations, the cultivation of MON 810, a GM corn produced by the American biotech giant Monsanto, will be prohibited in Germany, as will the sale of its seed. Aigner told reporters Tuesday she had legitimate reasons to believe that MON 810 posed "a danger to the environment," a position which she said the Environment Ministry also supported. In taking the step, Aigner is taking advantage of a clause in EU law which allows individual countries to impose such bans[...good to know!].
"Contrary to assertions stating otherwise, my decision is not politically motivated," Aigner said, referring to reports that she had come under pressure to impose a ban from within her party, the conservative Bavaria-based Christian Social Union. She stressed that the ban should be understood as an "individual case" and not as a statement of principle regarding future policy relating to genetic engineering.

I[smokingmirrors.blogspot's Les Visble]’ve been thinking about that Madison Avenue thing that brings us mind molders like reality TV and fake news as our models for contemporary life which presents humanity as a life form capably stupid enough to buy the crap they package along with the morons who tout it. This also brings us the shape-shifter politicians and cultural grooves that are like railway tracks from cradle to grave and which convince us we are just tubes that put things in one end only to send them out another; as if we were ambulatory tubes of toothpaste. If it weren’t for the coloration and flavor of the items going into the tubes we wouldn’t be able to distinguish them from the thing going out of the tubes. Garbage in and garbage out; through the speakers and headphones, from fork to mouth, from bottle to skin, from shelf to cart, from speech center to speech maker and so on and so forth.

I[Les Visible]’ve been noticing signs of revolt at all levels of the social spectrum and it’s surprising me. I realize that I’ve been pretty tough on the mainstream fish caught in the nets and not giving enough credit to what looks like a revolution catching fire all around the world. I’m starting to think that some indefinable force is moving through the people of the world and they are starting to react as if they really were capable of independent thought and then I ponder what I hear from so many sources which tell me that the mysterious elite have all of the situations and circumstances programmed and that no matter what I see it is all part of ‘their plan’. El estudio, titulado "La huella de carbono del Spam", revela que el envío de correos no deseados a las computadoras de todo el mundo supone un gasto energético de 33.000 millones de kilovatios por hora (KWh) a lo largo de todo un año, una cantidad de electricidad que podría abastecer a 2,4 millones de hogares.

El informe destaca que se trata de una energía desaprovechada, ya que el 80 por ciento del spam termina siendo ignorado y borrado por los destinatarios.

El establecimiento de filtros capaces de poner fin a esta práctica cada vez más habitual supondría, según el estudio, una reducción de emisiones de dióxido de carbono (CO2) equivalente a la retirada de millones de autos de las rutas de todo el planeta.

El vicepresidente de desarrollo de producto de McAfee, Jeff Green, destacó la necesidad de parar el spam "desde sus propios orígenes" y a través del desarrollo de mejores sistemas de defensa.

The inventor of genetic fingerprinting, Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, today warns that the government is putting at risk public support for the DNA national database by holding the genetic details of hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

Jeffreys, whose pioneering discoveries revolutionised police investigation techniques, condemned the government for leaving innocent people "branded as criminals" by its insistence on keeping the details of everyone arrested, regardless of whether they are later convicted.

He said he was left "almost speechless" by reports that the government planned to respond to a recent European court ruling - that storing innocent people's genetic details broke their right to privacy - by simply removing their profiles from the database but keeping the original DNA samples.

About ten years ago, I[Dan Eden] saw an interesting exercise in which a college psychology professor had taken photographs of her students, made copies that were flipped left to right, and then had them cut in half vertically. She reassembled the images using the two similar sides of the face.

[A quick way to do this is to place a small mirror perpendicular to a photograph showing a good front face view. As you look into the mirror you can form a whole face from the reflection of either side.]

The composite pictures were humorous. Although the individuals were easily recognizable, their facial expressions seemed to express exaggerated emotions, like anger, suspicion, or happiness -- and occasionally a look of total blankness. Even more interesting was the observation that the two sides of the same face were often so different. Why?

This exercise seemed to suggest that, while a handful of people have symmetrical faces, a vast majority of us do not. Also it raised the possibility that each side of our face could express different emotions at the same time! Subsequent research into facial expressions and the workings of the human brain has offered an interesting theory that not only explains this left and right difference in facial expressions, but could help us to understand our "other self."

Farmer served as Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission (officially known as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States), and is also a former New Jersey Attorney General.

Farmer’s book about his experiences working for the Commission is entitled The Ground Truth: The Story Behind America’s Defense on 9/11, and is set to be released tomorrow.

Un grupo de ecologistas protesta contra los alimentos transgénicos en la UAB

Han bloqueado la entrada al Centre d'Investigació en Agrogenòmica para denunciar la proliferación de estos alimentos alterados genéticamente.

Barcelona. (EFE).- Una treintena de ecologistas de varios colectivos han bloqueado esta mañana la entrada principal del Centre d'Investigació en Agrogenòmica de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) en protesta por la proliferación de alimentos transgénicos.

Los manifestantes, que impiden el acceso al edificio por la entrada principal, han colgado una pancarta en la fachada principal en la que se puede leer: "Ingeniería genética: mala ciencia, gran negocio".

Esta acción se enmarca en la "Semana de lucha contra los transgénicos y por la soberanía alimentaria", convocada entre el 14 y el 18 de abril por la red de entidades catalanas contra los alimentos transgénicos, Petroaliments, y que acabará el sábado con una manifestación en Zaragoza.

Según Mariel Vilella, portavoz del colectivo Transgénicos Fuera, los activistas piden que se prohíban los transgénicos en Catalunya, que es la segunda región de Europa con más hectáreas de alimentos transgénicos cultivadas.

The Government Is Already “Geo-Engineering” The Environment

The Associated Press reports that Obama administration is considering radical terra forming programs to stop “global warming,” but universities and government agencies are already doing it, while mass aerosol spraying campaigns have been ongoing for over a decade through the use of chemtrails.

The Associated Press reports today that the Obama administration has held discussions regarding the possibility of “geo-engineering” the earth’s climate to counter global warming by “shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun’s rays.” However, such programs are already being conducted by government-affiliated universities, government agencies, and on a mass scale through chemtrail spraying.

The AP report states that Obama’s science advisor John Holdren is pushing for radical terra forming programs to be explored such as creating an “artificial volcano”. Despite Holdren’s admission that such measures could have “grave side effects,” he added that, “we might get desperate enough to want to use it.”
