Molécula descubierta en la Isla de Pascua aumenta longevidad de ratones

Una molécula encontrada en la tierra de la Isla de Pascua (Chile) prolonga asombrosamente la vida de los ratones, permitiendo que algunos de ellos vivan más de 100 años del equivalente de la vida de los seres humanos.
Esta extraordinaria molécula -un producto derivado de una bacteria descubierta en una muestra tomada en este remoto archipiélago del Océano Pacífico en los años 1970, se llama rapamicina, en honor al nombre polinesio de estas Islas: Rapa Nui.
La rapamicina surgió inicialmente como un excelente producto para luchar contra los hongos.
Luego fue utilizada para prevenir el rechazo de órganos trasplantados a pacientes, y más tarde fue incorporada en implantes utilizados para mantener abiertas las arterias de pacientes con problemas coronarios. Actualmente se utiliza también en ensayos clínicos para el tratamiento contra el cáncer.

Los investigadores, intrigados por descubrimientos que sugerían que la rapamicina inhibe una enzima vinculada al envejecimiento en los invertebrados, decidieron añadir la droga en la dieta de ratones más viejos.

En un comentario también publicado por Nature, Matt Kaeberlein y Brian Kennedy, dos bioquímicos de la Universidad de Washington, advirtieron a las personas de mediana edad que no se apresurasen a tomar rapamicina, porque esta droga suprime el sistema inmunitario.

A team of experts recently discovered a six-kilometer-long lava cave system on Easter Island thought to have been used as a refuge by the island’s inhabitants during the 16th century. The team confirmed it is the largest cave on the island and the 11th-largest in the world in terms of area.

Cave experts, or speleologists, confirmed the caves were used by inhabitants of the island as refuge from tribal wars at a time when society was on the verge of collapse as a result of infighting, severe environmental degradation caused by deforestation, droughts, and famine.

“It has been a revelation,” said Enrique Tucki, administrator of the Rapa Nui National Park. “We knew these caves existed – they have been there for centuries – but we had not taken into account their variety, quantity, and peculiarity.”
