Nikola Tesla no doubt had more of an impact on life in the 20th century and onward than any scientist after him. Nowhere has one man created such a different world simply from the images from his mind. He was a skilled inventor and electrician who no doubt will be remembered by history fondly for his contributions in alternating current as well as his myriad inventions that furthered our understanding of electricity more than anything we could possibly imagine. But he also may have blazed another trail, having been one of the first ever to claim contact with alien intelligence.
Nikola Tesla wrote in his notes and letters to friends of a mysterious series of signals he had come across while studying the microscopic perturbations of electrical fields. So concise and numbered were these perturbations that he was certain they were the residual effects of some form of mysterious communication taking place. He essentially believed he had come across a signal very similar to something that SETI would look for several years later. It was in these signals that he soon became convinced that he was receiving communications from extraterrestrial life forms, likely from the planet Mars. Of course in those days the concept of alien intelligence was often construed as coming from Mars largely owed to the work of Giovanni Schiaparelli who observed what was later called canals running across the surface of the red planet. Of course later these claims were called into question, but only years after Tesla made his claim publicly. Of course the press, engaged in a longstanding love hate relationship with Tesla quickly ran several articles mocking the inventor’s claim.
Still, aside from the jocund articles printed at Tesla’s expense, a mystery remains long after the inventor’s demise. What were these mysterious signals? And by what means did he come across them? When most of Tesla’s equipment was seized or destroyed after his death, the device he had been using to document “feeble” signals from nowhere also disappeared. Could this simple device have saved the millions of dollars spent on the SETI program? And would it have had more success? As many of Tesla’s incredible inventions have never been reproduced, it’s hard to say how effective many of them were. And Tesla was known to tell his fair share of tall tales.
And furthermore, was there more to the story that wasn’t told? Could Tesla, the inventor of radio control have actually received inspiration of one sort or another from these mysterious signals? Those who interact with the paranormal often lead prolific lives of lateral thinking afterward and many become great inventors as a result of it. They have measured the signatures of a symmetry showing the same attributes as the golden ratio famous from art and architecture. The research team is publishing these findings in Science on the 8th January.
On the atomic scale particles do not behave as we know it in the macro-atomic world. New properties emerge which are the result of an effect known as the Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. In order to study these nanoscale quantum effects the researchers have focused on the magnetic material cobalt niobate. It consists of linked magnetic atoms, which form chains just like a very thin bar magnet, but only one atom wide and are a useful model for describing ferromagnetism on the nanoscale in solid state matter.
When applying a magnetic field at right angles to an aligned spin the magnetic chain will transform into a new state called quantum critical, which can be thought of as a quantum version of a fractal pattern. Prof. Alan Tennant, the leader of the Berlin group, explains "The system reaches a quantum uncertain – or a Schrödinger cat state. This is what we did in our experiments with cobalt niobate. We have tuned the system exactly in order to turn it quantum critical."
By tuning the system and artificially introducing more quantum uncertainty the researchers observed that the chain of atoms acts like a nanoscale guitar string. Dr. Radu Coldea from Oxford University, who is the principal author of the paper and drove the international project from its inception a decade ago until the present, explains: "Here the tension comes from the interaction between spins causing them to magnetically resonate. For these interactions we found a series (scale) of resonant notes: The first two notes show a perfect relationship with each other. Their frequencies (pitch) are in the ratio of 1.618…, which is the golden ratio famous from art and architecture." Radu Coldea is convinced that this is no coincidence. "It reflects a beautiful property of the quantum system – a hidden symmetry. Actually quite a special one called E8 by mathematicians, and this is its first observation in a material", he explains.
The observed resonant states in cobalt niobate are a dramatic laboratory illustration of the way in which mathematical theories developed for particle physics may find application in nanoscale science and ultimately in future technology. However open to the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrials, disarmament advocates shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for aliens to ride to their rescue. (It’s as chimerical as hawks who seek to huddle under missile defense systems.) However open to the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrials, disarmament advocates shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for aliens to ride to their rescue. (It’s as chimerical as hawks who seek to huddle under missile defense systems.) But if extraterrestrials are darting about our atmosphere, it’s a safe bet that they can’t be happy about past tests of nuclear detonations and the prospect of their use in warfare. Apparently extraterrestrials perceive a truth about nuclear weapons that many of us on earth don’t — that they’re a rip in the fabric of the space-time continuum.

Calling Charles Onians [...or Climategate Time Travel]
[On Mar. 20th, 2000, UK's The Independent ran an article on its Environment section, signed by Charles Onians and titled, Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past. Of course, you can see where i'm going with this... specially if you reside in the isles.
Onian starts off the article in this manner:

Sledges, snowmen, snowballs and the excitement of waking to find that the stuff has settled outside are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain's culture, as warmer winters - which scientists are attributing to global climate change - produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries.

Hello? Charles Onians in 2000? Don't ask me to explain but I'm posting this back to you via a time warp from December 2009. Yes, the future! You probably won't believe me and will think I'm mad or joking, but get this. Britain is suffering its second extremely cold winter in a row - we have enough snow, ice, frost and freezing fog to cobble dogs with (whatever that means.) Far from being "a very rare and exciting event", snowfall has become a major hazard in this country twice this past year - and we haven't even got to February 2010 yet. Also (again you will probably think I'm joking) but the CRU has just become a liability to climate science - leaked e-mails and files have revealed a web of deceit and manipulation that threatens to undermine the theory of Anthropogenic Global Warming itself. I urge you to pull this article immediately, as it will become a laughing stock in years to come. Charles? Hello? Hello? ... Rats, I'm probably too late.

The media are awash with talking heads bloviating about the top stories of the last decade. The wired-in society. The growth of organic food. The new frugality. This is the ritual that reveals their true function in the culture: pacification. It's their way of signaling the masses that Bigger Thinkers are looking after things, so go back to your Wii or Survivor or Facebook reveries.
The amazing thing is how little is ever mentioned about the stories that really mattered, those that affected the very nature of our society, its institutions, and the relation of the people to their state and society.
Those stories paint a picture of danger, of a people who have lost control of their government and the corporations that own it. But you'll hear nary a word about such difficult truths from any storyteller in the conventional media.
So here, in no particular order, are my Top Ten Stories of the Naughties, the ones that really matter.

- The Neo-Feudalization of the economy.
- The surrender of civil liberties.
- The failure of "the free market" to sustain prosperity.
- The collapse of the media.
- The meaninglessness of elections.
"It was the decade when all the institutions that they believed would protect them — the media, the courts, elected offcials, the market, messianic new leaders — in fact, betrayed them."
